The people ask whether they still need to keep the mourning fasts now that the temple is being rebuilt. God's answer moves past the ritual to the heart behind it, and then promises a day when those fasts become feasts. What God wants is not obligation but relationship, worked out in justice and mercy toward the vulnerable.

God's people had been staring at a temple foundation for years with nothing to show for it, and God answers their discouragement not with a bigger effort but with his Spirit. Across Zechariah 4 through 6 the Spirit empowers the builder, clears the land of evil, and moves out over the whole earth, ending with a high priest crowned as king in a moment that points straight to Jesus.
