Ian Berry was born in Lancashire, England, in 1934 and made his reputation in South Africa, where he worked for the Daily Mail and later for Drum magazine. He was the only photographer to document the massacre at Sharpeville in 1960, and his photographs were used in the trial to prove the victims’ innocence.

Henri Cartier-Bresson invited Berry to join Magnum Photos in 1962, when he was based in Paris, and he became a full member of the agency five years later. In 1964, he moved to London to become the first contract photographer for The Observer Magazine. While there, he completed a project in the Whitechapel area, with the first grant for a photographer from the Arts Council, photographing the changing community and his country of origin with fresh eyes after many years abroad. This work in 1978 became the book titled The English. Since then, assignments have taken him around the world. He was the first photographer to get into Prague on the day the Russians invaded Czechoslovakia, and he covered the Troubles in Ireland, famine in Ethiopia, as well as conflicts in Israel, Vietnam, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His major body of work produced in South Africa is represented in two of his books —Black and Whites: L’Afrique du Sud (1988) with a with a foreword by the then French president François Mitterrand, and Living Apart (1996) with a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Editorial assignments included work for National Geographic, Fortune, Stern, Geo, Esquire, Paris-Match, and Life. Berry also reported on the political and social transformations in China and the former USSR. Along with two books for the Spanish fishing industry, he completed one on child slavery in Ghana, and more commercial books including Women in Wine, The Sporting Horse, and Famous Piazzas.

I only spoke with Ian once, in 2017, as part of my research for our film on the life of Bill Jay. He was polite and erudite as you would expect, and in the conversation he reflected on his time in London in the 1960s and early 1970s, including his friendships with fellow photographers David Hurn, Phillip Jones Griffiths, Bryn Campbell and Josef Koudelka. In this special episode of The Conversation series Grant Scott speaks with award winning photographer Marc Asnin. In an informal conversation they discuss photography in the first twenty-five years of the 21st century based on his project Act One: A Century in the Making.

Act One: A Century in the Making
Act One: A Century in the Making is a major new photography publication and exhibition examining the first twenty-five years of the 21st century that brings together the work of more than one hundred internationally recognized photographers alongside leading scholars, journalists, historians, writers, and public intellectuals to examine the defining political, cultural, emotional, and social realities of the first twenty-five years of the 21st century. Published by Other/Side Editions, the project positions photography not simply as documentation, but as a form of cultural memory, inquiry, and artistic testimony. Through themes including war and conflict, migration, race in America, political division, technology, identity, and environmental crisis, the publication reconstructs context around images at a moment when photography is increasingly experienced in fragmented and decontextualized ways. At a moment when images are increasingly consumed out of context and historical memory exists under constant pressure, Act One seeks to create a space for reflection, connection, and deeper public understanding. In this week’s episode photographer and filmmaker Emily Garthwaite takes on our ‘Proust Photo Quiz’.

The Proust Questionnaire is a set of questions answered by the French writer Marcel Proust. Proust answered the questionnaire in a confession album, a form of parlour game popular at the end of the 1890s. The album, titled An Album to Record Thoughts, Feelings, etc. was found in 1924 and published in the French literary journal Les Cahiers du Mois. Our ‘Proust Photo Quiz’ is an adaption of the original text.

Emily Garthwaite
Garthwaite was born in 1993 and grew up in the UK. She took up photography as a teenager and intended to pursue painting at Central Saint Martins, but found herself studying Film and Photography. After working in club and fashion photography, she completed a Master of Arts  in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the University of Westminster in 2016. It was when she visited India for the first time to scatter her grandmother’s ashes in Assam, where her grandmother grew up, that she decided to work within photojournalism. The photographs from her months of travel through India were exhibited at the University of York’s Norman Rea Gallery in 2014 under the title Afterlife and her image of an Asian elephant titled Chained to Tradition was a finalist in the 2015 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards in the Photojournalism category. During the summer of 2015, Garthwaite worked with the Rațiu Family Charitable Foundation in Romania, where she documented the salt flats of Turda, publishing a photo journal in the magazine Suitcase. In 2017, the Iranian Arts Institute invited her to photograph the Arba’een Pilgrimage, the world’s largest annual pilgrimage, which instigated the series Iraq: Road to Arba’een. Garthwaite visited Southern Iraq for the first time that October and returned in 2018 as the geopolitical landscape evolved. She co-directed her first feature-length documentary on the subject (alternatively titled 41 Days in Iraq on Arba’een or The 40th Day), which screened in 2018 at the Chehelcheragh International Festival in Tehran as well as in Italy. That same year, she exhibited her photography series Iraq: Road to Arba’een and A Portrait of India. In 2019 she spent time in Dearborn, Michigan capturing its local Muslim community and was named in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. In 2020, she founded the WomenTranslate service and after the COVID-19 lockdown, she returned to Iraq, visiting the Zagros Mountains and Tigris River. At the former, she accompanied the Bakhtiari people on their Kooch migration.This was followed by two climate-driven trips down the Tigris. She exhibited A Journey Down the Tigris River at the Visa pour L’Image in Perpignan, where she won the 2023 ICRC Humanitarian Visa d’or Award, and Tears of the Tigris at the Leica Gallery London. Her project Light Between Mountains received a CCFD–Terre Solidaire grant, while her contributions to the Leon McCaron Noema essay The Last of the Marsh Arabs won her the 2022 Covering Climate Now Award for Photography. In 2024, Save the Children commissioned her to photograph the Yazidi community in Iraq 10 years on from the Yazidi genocide. She is a Leica Ambassador and and has walked over 1,500km across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
