This is our longest episode yet. We've got a lot of ground to cover. We will dive into Unpacking the Knapsack and Robin D'Angelo's book, White Fragility, in helping us to understand the implications of white privilege amidst systemic racism. Later, we'll discuss how to diffuse biases. We will also talk about how meditation makes you more productive. We'll dive in-depth discussing cognitive abilities. For example, operating in the default mode network and how mindfulness is interconnected with the expanded firing of neural pathways. From here, I share Mahatma Gandhi's Law of Love, which, while written in the 1930s, seems very applicable to the times we are in, now. Speaking of, it is impossible to ignore the protests in Portland, where riots have been occurring for the past two months. This must be addressed. Further, we must consider the big picture and understand that the Russian KGB government has systematically executed ideological subversion seeking to sew discord between the right and the left. Today we're diving deeper into social justice studies. Get ready! I'm taking you on a journey through my summer reading list~sharing excerpts of a book written by an African American clinical psychologist, Beverly Tatum, who wrote: Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria. Using her narrative, we're going to consciously and productively discuss identity politics, learning how to show up as an ally for people of color, dismantling systemic racism by promoting understanding, and relating through shared perspectives. ~Excerpt from the book: "It is at this stage of redefining Whiteness, immersion/emersion, that the feelings of guilt and shame start to fade. Reflecting on her own White identity development, sociologist Becky Thompson chronicles this process:[I understood] that I didn’t have to recreate the wheel in my own life. I began to actively seek writing by white women who have historically stood up against racism—Elly Bulkin, Lillian Smith, Sara Evans,Angelina Grimke, Ruth Frankenberg, Helen Joseph, Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz, Tillie Olsen, Minnie Bruce Pratt, Ruth Seid, Mab Segrest, and others. There are biographies and autobiographies by White individuals who have been engaged in antiracist activities. Check out these books for further study: A Season of Justice, the autobiography of Morris Dees, the executive director of the Southern Poverty Law Center and a vigorous anti-Klan litigator. Also, there is Outside the Magic Circle, the oral history of Virginia Foster Durr, a Southern belle turned civil rights activist. And there is The Education of a WASP, the story of Lois Stalvey, a mother struggling to create a nonracist environment for her children. Such books can be an antidote to the feelings of isolation and loneliness that White people often feel at this point. This week, I had the privilege of interviewing the Youngbloods. 😊 Thank you so much to Radiance for having us on her podcast, it’s been a pleasure watching you grow professionally, as an artist and as an individual. My name is Kamo Youngblood, raised in the great PNW. In August of last year, I fell madly in love with this man named Banjo and his now seven year old son, Jethro. We became a family and got married less than three months later. Our love is one for the books, as Banjo puts it, “it is a quintessential fairy tale romance.” We fell in love over our gratitude for each other’s kindness and respect for one another, our desire to make change in the world, and live life on the road. We both have big dreams of building a network of properties around the country where one can genuinely feel at home, as well as a string of superhero camps 🦸‍♂️🦹🏽‍♀️ where foster children and adults alike can express the best and worst versions of themselves in a safe and entertaining environment. We were in Florida, the completely opposite side of the country, on our first yearly trip around the country together, building our network of communities when COVID-19 hit and the separation and quarantine laws were set into place in the United States. "The Revolujahs and The Medicine Show Revival" is the name of our traveling caravan. We are a group of entertainers, performers, musicians, mechanics, healers, cooks, nannies, cleaners, painters, teachers, friends, fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers. We are here for you.
