Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd was Lord Chief Justice from 2013 to 2017. 

In 2016 Lord Thomas found himself in the eye of the storm when he and fellow judges ruled that the Government needed the approval of Parliament before triggering Brexit. He also endured a turbulent time in his four years at the top of the judiciary, clashing with the then Lord Chancellor/Justice Secretary, Liz Truss.

Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, who is Chancellor of The University of Law, has reached the heights of the judicial system, first sitting as a law lord and later in the Supreme Court, becoming its president in 2012. Lord Woolf has held the most senior judicial posts in both the criminal and civil justice systems.  He served as a law lord in the country’s highest court; as Master of the Rolls - the most senior civil judge in England and Wales - and then from 2000 for five years as Lord Chief Justice, the highest job in the judicial hierarchy.

In this episode, he talks about his time in office, which coincided with Tony Blair’s constitutional reforms, the biggest shake-up in relations between judges and the executive in recent years. He discusses the problems of prison overcrowding, sentencing and the attitude of ministers to the rule of law.
