Our tour of the 17 member institutions in the UNC system continues with a story detailing just a few of the many innovative programs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. In a very short span of time UNCW has become one of the top ten public institutions in the South according to U.S. News and World Report. Now here's Rick Sullivan to give us just a little insight as to why!

According to the Journal of Academics, ECU is the third-largest university in North Carolina and the fastest-growing campus in the University of North Carolina system for six consecutive years. The university offers more than 100 undergraduate degrees and more than 75 master’s programs. It has also gained noticeable rankings from U.S. News and World Report and the Princeton Review.

Founded in 1980, Science and Math was the first public residential high school in the country with a science, technology, engineering and math focus. In 2013 it's still pioneering the way talented young students are learning

The sixth annual Thomas Willis Lambeth Distinguished Lecture in Public Policy was held at UNC-Chapel Hill. Guest speaker Former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt spoke on the topic "North Carolina is Underinvesting in Education."

On University Day 2013, UNC-Chapel Hill Installed it's 11th Chancellor. Dr. Carol Folt is an internationally recognized environmental scientist and award-winning teacher, Folt served as interim president of Dartmouth College during 2012-2013. She also was Dartmouth Professor of Biological Sciences at the prestigious Ivy League institution. Folt is the first woman to lead Carolina.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill celebrated its 200th Anniversary of becoming the nation's first public university. In 1993 President Bill Clinton & Charles Kuralt came to Kenan Stadium on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill to celebrate this historic milestone.

The University of North Carolina at Asheville is one of the smallest of the institutions in the UNC system. But Chancellor Anne Ponder makes a good point when she says the school is a MAJOR player in Western North Carolina. A recent economic impact study conducted by the school reports that UNCA supports approximately 2600 jobs in the region & has an economic impact of $268 Million.

There are seventeen institutions making up the University of North Carolina System. We're going to visit each of them to get a feel for what they do, in terms of educating and elevating our communities, and how they do it.
