Grim Mourning and welcome to The Grim. On this special Halloween and Día de los Muertos episode, host Kristin opens the gate to one of Mexico’s most haunted cemeteries, the Panteón de Belén in Guadalajara. Beneath its gothic arches and jasmine-scented air lies a world where faith, folklore, and the restless dead intertwine.
Once built to preserve life as part of the Hospital of Belén, this sacred ground became a city of the dead after the cholera epidemic of 1833. Today, its marble crypts and whispering colonnades stand as a museum of the macabre and a gateway into some of Mexico’s most chilling legends.
Step carefully through the shadows as we uncover the Vampire of Guadalajara, the tragic tale of Victoriana Hurtado, the spectral boy Nachito, and the Lovers of Belén, doomed souls who found in death the union denied to them in life. From ghostly carriages and cursed trees to buried treasure guarded by pirates and spirits, Panteón de Belén is a place where history and legend blur beneath the flicker of candlelight.
As the veil thins on All Hallows’ Eve, we descend into this realm of memory and mourning, where Día de los Muertos transforms sorrow into celebration. Candlelit altars blaze against the dark, offerings of marigolds and chocolate guiding souls home for one more night among the living.
Join us as The Grim ventures into Guadalajara’s most haunted cemetery, where every stone holds a story and every legend refuses to rest.
