Election season 2019 has come to an end, the results are out and political parties know how they’ve performed. Who was biggest looser and who was the biggest winner? And who sneaked in when we least expected? What do results of last week’s election tell us about voter patterns and things to be cognisant of in future? What do they tell us about voter loyalty?

Over the past couple of days, the Department of Home Affairs made a call to all SA citizens to who had not collected their IDs and to those who did not have IDs, to come forward and get help. The Home Affairs offices have extended their working hours to accommodate people who had problems with their ID.

We get an update from the Department about the number for people who headed this call and how many, of those hundreds of thousands uncollected IDs, have been collected?

The Denis Hurrley Centre working together with the Department of Home Affairs has issued ID documents to a group of homeless people to enable them to vote for the first time in Wednesday’s elections through a US government funded programme to increase political access to the homeless. Bishop Denis Hurley performed a pivotal role in the fight against apartheid - he was an outspoken opponent of apartheid, as chairman of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference, Hurley drafted the first of the ground-breaking pastoral letters in which the bishops denounced apartheid as "blasphemy" and "intrinsically evil." We keep track of what has been happening at the centre since they convened with special votes on Monday

The KZN Council of Churches has been active in encouraging citizens to be active by participating in all electoral processes. They have also warned against political intolerance (using the KZN political killings as one of the examples). They have deployed 1014 observers across the province to monitor 25o voting stations.

Songezo Mabece spoke to Siya Qoza – Spokesperson for the Minister of Home Affairs (Dr Siyabonga Cwele) about the upgrades that have been launched in the Stellenbosch Home Affairs office. The state-of-the-art infrastructure will ensure that applicants no longer wait up to six months for an ID, as smart IDs will be issued within a week.
They also spoke about the systems upgrades and the challenges that come with these upgrades (i.e. being offline more than once a week for the past 3 months) and we’ll also get an update on the uncollected ID cards that the Home Affairs has been calling on people to collect.
