According to the Africa Developer Ecosystem Report 2021, the demand for African computer software developers reached an all-time high in 2021 on the backdrop of a global economic crisis.

The continent’s developer ecosystem is growing and the total number of developers in Africa is now above 716,000 (7-hundred-and-16-thousand).

 Africa Climate Summit convenes The United Nations’ Africa Climate Week convened this Monday in Libreville, Gabon, with more than 1,000 participants gathering and sharing ideas on how to tackle the climate emergency as it intensifies throughout the continent. With severe drought, raging floods, and extreme weather bearing down on Africa’s 54 nations, the five-day meeting will focus on the major elements required to lessen the dangerous effects of the rapidly changing climate. This as the continent faces deadly drought, historic floods, and extreme weather events, African politicians, civil society, and business leaders will voice calls for urgent action. While African countries are the least responsible for the crisis, the continent is to pay the highest of prices. We speak to the African Climate foundation on the focus theme of the year and the implications of the global climate crisis on Africa.

Bongani Tembe is widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading artists and arts managers. He has

performed in many parts of the world and has contributed positively to the advancement of arts and culture in South Africa and internationally. In 2016, Mr. Tembe was honoured by the French Government with the prestigious insignia of Officier des Arts et de Lettres in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the arts. Mr. Tembe is a member of UNESCO’s Scientific Committee on Arts Education. He is the longest serving board member of South Africa’s National Arts Council and, since 2002, he has been a member of the International Society of the Performing Arts. As part of the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of South Africa’s democracy in 2004, Bongani Tembe produced a highly successful tour to Europe which featured the London Symphony Orchestra, the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and award-winning South Africanchoirs – Imilonji kaNtu (based in Soweto) and the Durban Serenade Choral Society (based in Umlazi Township).

AFS Intercultural Programs South Africa is calling on eligible South African high school learners to apply for the U.S. Department of State’s Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program. The selected students, serve as “youth ambassadors” of their home country, promoting mutual understanding by forming lasting relationships with their host families and communities. High school students from various countries get the oppoprtunity live and study for an academic year in the United State with a host family, attend an American high school, acquire leadership skills, and engage in activities to learn about U.S. society and values; they also help educate Americans about their home country and culture. Dr. Tim Hart, Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)

We’re in conversation withDr Tim Hart from the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), talking about the findings of a study that sought to investigate how South Africans with disabilities experienced COVID-19.

The study primarily looked at the socio-economic, wellbeing and human rights related experiences of people with disabilities. According to Dr Hart, this was possibly one of the largest datasets on people with disabilities’ COVID-19 experiences in a single country.

According to the study, people with disabilities experienced significant household shocks, with 76% experiencing difficulties to pay for basic living expenses, 73% of those needing assistance experiencing interruptions and and many reporting interruptions in access to essential disability and rehabilitation services. Communication also remained one of the major challenges experienced by people with disabilities, who reported very little government intervention.

Dr Hart says the Disability Rights Disaster Framework is far from complete and that it must be completed urgently. He also raised concern over missing disability data.
