But the way it has played out with multiple setbacks and scrambling problem-solving is not something anyone could have predicted.

Although Facebook has the most number of users in South Africa, like in many other countries – Twitter is the most news-friendly social media platforms. It is by far the place that journalists are most likely to spend their social media energies.

In 2020, Decode Communications launched the South African Government Leaders in the Cabinet and provincial Executive Councils on Twitter Report – a benchmark tool with the purpose of reflecting on the presence and activity of leaders and their

spokespeople.

The 2021 report is an update of last year’s report – providing findings and making a number of recommendations on ways to improve citizen engagement and information sharing by government leaders.

After a COVID-induced break last year, Denis Hurley Centre’s annual Meal of Reconciliation is back and will be celebrated on December 16 – an opportunity for Durban’s homed and homeless to share a festive meal together as an importantly symbolic act of reconciliation.

Prior to COVID, the Meal of Reconciliation has been an annual ritual at the Denis Hurley Centre – being commemorated in Durban on 16 December, South Africa’s national Day of Reconciliation.  The late Archbishop Denis Hurley – and his ‘lieutenant’ Paddy Kearny – both committed their lives to bringing about reconciliation: between Christians of different traditions, between people of different faiths, between different races and cultures, and between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’.

A recent study in Mqanduli and surrounding areas in the Eastern Cape found that children’s healthy growth and development is not only undermined by their inability to access nutritious food but that unhealthy environments and poor access to routine child health services such as Vitamin A supplementation and deworming, also impede healthy child development.

The study was conducted by The Grow Great Campaign, in partnership with Philani Maternal, the Child Health and Nutrition Trust and the Nelson Mandela University. The study findings were compiled in a report launched last month.

The Department of Social Development in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Joint Fund appointed an independent panel of experts to conduct extensive on Basic Income support. Today, the findings of the Expert Panel Report on Basic Income Support in the country, and the social and economic context which affects many South Africans, was launched in a webinar. The report also looks at the economic impact on further extension of income support, creation of jobs, expansion of social support and dependency.

We zoom into the online school environment which has remained unregulated for several years now.  However with the profusion of virtual schools shooting up in response to the Covid environment, the Department of Basic Education is now urgently taking steps to implement policy and regulations to facilitate accreditation, quality and legality of virtual schools.
