Sixth Sunday after Pentecost
The Vineyard Worker Parable
Parables of Jesus Series
READINGS
Psalm 145:1–14
Matthew 20:1-16
As laborers in God’s field do you want what is owed to you or what God has promised? Today we remind ourselves who we are working for and whose we are. For when we hear what God has to say, God has reversed what we expect. This scandalous reversal of expectation, our sense of justice, and even our hopes is a central piece of the New Testament. Whoever wants to be first must be last, and servant of all (Mark 9:35). There goes our ideas of greatness and worth. Stopped at the gate of God’s kingdom Some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last (Luke 13:30). At the end of the day it is Jesus, who is first and last (Revelation 1:17), who has done it all; he has worked for the wages of both first and last, and calls our labors to cease.
