On October 31, 1517 – Martin Luther allegedly nailed his 95 Theses to a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, sparking the Protestant Reformation.

       Formally titled Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences, it was a revolutionary document that sparked the Protestant Reformation. The story behind the 95 Theses begins with Luther's growing disillusionment with certain practices within the Catholic Church, particularly the sale of indulgences, which he saw as a corrupt way for the church to collect money and for individuals to essentially "buy" forgiveness for sins During the early 16th century, the Catholic Church encouraged the sale of indulgences, which were certificates sold to reduce punishment for sins. The funds raised through indulgences were partly used to finance large church projects, including the rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Johann Tetzel, a Dominican friar and indulgence seller, was particularly aggressive in promoting these sales in Germany, using slogans like "As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs." Martin Luther, a German monk, theologian, and professor, was increasingly critical of this practice. He believed that indulgences misled the faithful and contradicted the core Christian teachings of repentance and salvation through faith alone. It is widely believed that Luther nailed his theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church in Germany, although historians have debated this detail. The church door served as a sort of public bulletin board for academic discussions, so this would have been a customary method to invite debate. Regardless of how he went about it, Luther’s act set off a chain of events that led to the Protestant Reformation. His ideas also inspired other reformers, like John Calvin and Huldrych Zwingli, who helped establish Protestant movements across Europe.Martin Luther's life and his role in the Protestant Reformation provide some surprisingly relevant insights into investing and personal finance, especially around values, patience, and adaptability. Here are five key investment thesis for the modern investor:❶Prioritize Financial Literacy and Education. Luther translated the Bible into German so that ordinary people could understand it and engage directly with its teachings, emphasizing the importance of knowledge. Educate yourself about the fundamentals of investing and financial markets. The more you understand, the better equipped you’ll be to make informed decisions independently or as part of an advisor relationship. Financial literacy can also protect you from potential scams and misinformation.❷Challenge Conventional Wisdom. Luther questioned established practices, especially the sale of indulgences, and sparked a movement. Similarly, successful investors often think independently and are willing to question market trends or hype. Instead of blindly following market sentiment or investment fads, develop your own investment plan. Or have someone do that for you.❸Invite debate. Confirmation Bias entails listening to only that which validates what you already believe to be true. If you only look for confirming data, this information will echo endlessly in your head at the expense of an open mind. Read different viewpoints. And beware of social media where giving you more of what you already believe is the whole point, not a design flaw. ❹Write It Down.  Planning documents like your investment thesis should be just that: DOCUMENTS. If it is important, put it in writing, which gives you clarity of purpose and will help you focus on the long term when market corrections are bestowed upon you. A well-constructed and written plan creates a habit of discipline and makes it harder to pitch your plans overboard at the first sign of difficulty. ❺Rhyme Isn’t a Reason. Catchy slogans like "As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs” are examples of the rhyme-as-reason fallacy. We remember things better when they rhyme, but that doesn’t make them true.  Yet Dr. Matthew McGlone of Lafayette College found that his students remembered rhymes better and supposed that they were more accurate and truthful than mere prose. For example, “asked whether financial success makes people healthier, almost all McGlone’s subjects disagreed, but ‘wealth makes health’ seemed much more plausible.” Investors are often told to sell in May and go away for the summer and fall months. This is terrible advice for investing and tax planning, and not just this year. Before the invention of the written language, ancient poets relied on our ability to remember rhymes to pass on their stories. Well, thanks for the memories. But maybe it is time for us to forget the rhyme.

On October 21 (1805), at the Battle of Trafalgar, British naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson defeated the combined fleets of France and Spain, ensuring British naval supremacy.

       The British Royal Navy, under the command of Admiral Horatio Nelson, faced off against the combined fleets of Napoleonic France and Spain, led by Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve. The battle occurred off the coast of Cape Trafalgar, near Spain’s southwestern coast, and was part of Napoleon Bonaparte's larger plan to invade Britain by neutralizing its naval superiority. Admiral Nelson, aware of the numerical superiority of the enemy, devised a bold and unorthodox strategy. Instead of engaging in the traditional line-of-battle formation, he divided his fleet into two columns that would sail perpendicular to the Franco-Spanish line, intending to break through and engage the enemy in close-quarters combat. This maneuver, while risky, allowed the British ships to disrupt the enemy formation, creating chaos and preventing them from coordinating effectively. Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, led the charge, and despite intense fighting, the British fleet's superior discipline, tactics, and gunnery began to overwhelm the larger but less cohesive enemy. The outcome was a resounding British victory. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost 22 ships, either captured or destroyed, while the British didn’t lose a single vessel, solidifying Britain's status as the world’s foremost naval power. Tragically, Admiral Nelson was mortally wounded by a French sniper during the battle and died aboard Victory shortly after learning of his triumph. His death made him a national hero, and his legacy as one of Britain’s greatest naval commanders was sealed. The victory at Trafalgar not only safeguarded Britain from invasion but also ensured that no other European power could challenge its supremacy at sea for the rest of the Napoleonic Wars and beyond.

       Here are five lessons for the modern investor that can be drawn from the Battle of Trafalgar:

1. Practice, practice, practice. Ships of Nelson’s navy were known to practice their gunnery until they could deliver at least three full broadsides to the enemy’s two. That overwhelming firepower made British naval forces the uncontested masters of the sea for several generations. Now is an excellent time for you to practice as an investor and understand how you will react in various market scenarios while things are relatively calm. How will you feel if/when the market drops anchor for a while or when it starts to sink? Judging your gut reactions now will help mitigate their effects later.  2. Run the risks, or don’t. Admiral Nelson meticulously prepared his fleet, knowing success depended on anticipating and mitigating the risks to his ships. You should consider both potential rewards and risks. I know, we talk a lot about that. But the reason is that so many investors lack that kind of superior discipline in the heat of the moment when markets are down or when becalmed and seemingly not moving much. You absolutely must start with how much risk you are prepared to take before setting sail with your investment plans. 3. Fortune favors the bold, but only when backed by expertise. Nelson’s unorthodox tactics were daring but based on deep naval knowledge. For us, bold moves can lead to high rewards, but only when grounded in research and expertise. If you don't, as they said in the British Navy, mind your Ps and Qs, you can wind up speculating instead of investing. 4. Improvise, adapt, and overcome. The fog of war often made it hard to predict enemy movements, but Nelson could adjust quickly when needed. Are you ready to adapt to market conditions when they inevitably change? Flexibility in adjusting strategies—whether reallocating assets or cutting losses when markets shift—can be crucial in volatile environments.5. Strong leadership and confidence inspire success. Nelson's leadership inspired confidence in his crew, which was essential to the victory (the battle) and the Victory (the ship). Similarly, successful investment managers, advisors, and, hopefully, our clients must display confidence and clear decision-making. Why? Because that is what will reduce the chances of emotional, panic-driven mistakes. 

        These are fundamental lessons for investors and the same ones I steer my ship by. Coincidentally, my ship is also named VICTORY.

On October 15, 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte is exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he spends the last six years of his life.

He probably should have seen that coming since the very same week (October 19th) marked his retreat from Moscow three years earlier. Born in 1769 on the island of Corsica, Napoleon rose to prominence during the French Revolution, becoming a military hero and political leader. In 1799, he seized power in a coup, establishing himself as First Consul and later crowning himself Emperor of France in 1804. Napoleon's military genius led him to conquer much of Europe, forming a vast empire and implementing reforms such as the Napoleonic Code, which influenced legal systems worldwide. However, his ambition led to overreach, most notably his disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812. After a series of defeats, he was forced to abdicate in 1814 and was exiled to Elba. He briefly returned to power during the "Hundred Days" in 1815 before his final defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, after which he was exiled again, this time to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died in 1821. His legacy endures through his military strategies, legal reforms, and the reshaping of European borders.              Here are seven lessons for the modern investor from the Life of Napoleon Bonaparte:1. Know When to Cut Your LossesNapoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 was a classic case of overcommitting to a losing strategy. Instead of retreating early, he pushed further into harsh conditions, costing him his army. In investing, if a stock or asset isn’t performing as expected, it’s important to reevaluate your position and know when to exit before losses compound. 2. Always Have a Long-Term PlanNapoleon had ambitious goals, but his failure to plan for long-term sustainability led to his downfall. Short-term victories are important, but successful investing requires a long-term strategy. Focus on building wealth steadily over time rather than chasing short-term gains that can be fleeting, or in Napoleon’s case- fleeing.3. Understand the Power of CompoundingNapoleon didn’t conquer Europe overnight—it was a series of incremental victories that built his empire. Similarly, the power of compounding is a slow but powerful force in investing that can exponentially grow your wealth, just as Napoleon’s small wins accumulated to create a vast empire. Compounding is only magical when it goes in the right direction, advancing, not retreating. 4. Stay Informed and Analyze the TerrainNapoleon’s success often came from his deep understanding of the battlefield terrain and his opponent’s weaknesses. In the investment world, you must know the lay of the land like Napoleon did. Thorough research about markets, economics, and investor psychology is a strategic advantage.5. Don’t Rely on Luck—PrepareNapoleon famously said, “I would rather have lucky generals than good ones,” but luck alone didn’t secure his victories—meticulous planning did. Investors sometimes rely on market speculation or timing the market, hoping for a stroke of luck. However, a sound, well-prepared strategy is far more reliable than hoping for the right moment. Preparation and patience lead to consistent success.6. Leadership and Discipline Are CrucialNapoleon was a disciplined leader who inspired loyalty and dedication in his troops, which was key to his success. For investors, discipline is equally important. Avoid emotional decisions, stick to your investment plan, and resist the temptation to react to every Fed utterance. Just like a leader steering their troops, discipline guides long-term financial success.7. Don’t Overestimate Your AbilitiesIn the end, Napoleon’s downfall came from overconfidence. He underestimated the challenges of the Russian campaign and the resilience of his enemies. In investing, overconfidence can lead to taking unnecessary risks or believing you are smarter than the market. Humility and self-awareness are key—recognize the limits of your knowledge and seek advice when needed.

🗓️On October 12th, 1810, the first-ever Oktoberfest was held in Munich, Germany, to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.   

      Back then the citizens of Munich were invited to partake in the royal wedding festivities, which included horse races and days of merrymaking on the fields, now called Theresienwiese, in honor of the princess. The event was such a success that it became an annual tradition, gradually evolving into what we know as Oktoberfest today. Over the years, horse races were phased out, and beer became the centerpiece of the festival. Breweries began setting up tents, and traditional Bavarian music, dancing, and food turned it into a celebration of local culture. Today, Oktoberfest is the largest folk festival in the world, attracting millions of visitors to Munich every year. It lasts for about 16-18 days, usually from late September to the first weekend in October. Beyond its Munich roots, the festival has spread globally, with cities from the United States to Brazil hosting their own versions, all sharing the same vibrant Bavarian spirit. Here are four lessons for the modern investor from the history of Oktoberfest:🍻Evolve with the times, Ja?: Oktoberfest started as a royal wedding celebration and evolved into a global festival attended by millions of party goers. Investors should note the importance of adaptability, recognizing when to pivot or expand a tactic or two to meet new demands and opportunities, especially when something different is brewing. 🍻Leverage Tradition for Longevity: Oktoberfest’s success lies in its ability to balance tradition with modern appeal. For investors, some strategies stand the test of time though they need modern updates. For instance, the old buy and hold philosophy might become research and rent in today’s dynamic environment. 🍻Economic Resilience Through Diversification: Oktoberfest generates revenue not just from beer and bratwurst but also from entertainment, travel, and tourism. For investors, having various income streams helps keep the party going.🍻Think internationally: Though rooted in Munich, Oktoberfest expanded globally, proving that successful local concepts can scale internationally. Now may be a time to scale your own efforts internationally as US interest rates decline and the dollar likely follows on a relative basis. US assets have dominated for so long, that the eventual hangover may be a doozy.

On October 1, 1975, The Thrilla in Manila, the third and final boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, was held in the Philippines.    

The fight was regarded as one of the greatest boxing matches in history, known for its intensity, drama, and physical brutality. And the rivalry between Ali and Frazier was legendary. Frazier had handed Ali his first professional defeat in their first fight in 1971 (the "Fight of the Century"), and Ali won the rematch in 1974. The Thrilla in Manila was the rubber match, with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line. It took place in sweltering heat, adding to the physical toll on both fighters. For 14 rounds, they exchanged punishing blows. Ali, known for his speed and finesse, had to adopt a more aggressive strategy to counter Frazier's relentless pressure and powerful punches. Frazier, with his signature style of closing the distance, relentlessly attacked Ali's body and head, absorbing damage but continuing to move forward. By the 14th round, both fighters were exhausted, with Ali even contemplating quitting at one point. However, Frazier’s vision was so impaired from swelling around his eyes that his trainer, Eddie Futch, stopped the fight before the 15th round, declaring Ali the winner by technical knockout. Ali retained his title, but the fight left both men physically and emotionally drained. The Thrilla in Manila remains a defining moment in boxing history, symbolizing the relentless determination and resilience of both fighters.              Here are three lessons that modern investors can learn from the famous Thrilla in Manila:1. Endurance is a Key to SuccessThe Thrilla in Manila was a grueling, 14-round contest where both Ali and Frazier pushed their physical and mental limits. Ali later called it the closest thing to dying he had ever experienced in the ring. For investors, that kind of long-term endurance, or something sort of like it… is critical. Markets can be volatile, with sharp rises and falls, but those who focus on their strategies and tactics and pay attention to defense are often rewarded. Just as in boxing, the ability to withstand pressure and remain steady can be the difference between failure and living to fight another day.2. Adaptability Beats a Single StrategyDuring the fight, both Ali and Frazier had to adjust their tactics. Ali, known for his quick footwork, had to shift to a more aggressive strategy when Frazier's relentless pressure pushed him into corners. For investors, rigid adherence to a single investment strategy can be dangerous in a changing market. Being adaptable—adjusting your portfolio based on market conditions, new opportunities, and risks—can help navigate the complexities of investing. Flexibility allows for better handling of market "punches" as they come. Recently T-Bills come to mind here as a great flexible strategy shift that many people didn’t make when the opportunity presented itself. And the downturn in bonds turned out to be a gut punch. 3. Know When to ExitIn the 14th round, Frazier’s trainer stopped the fight, knowing that continuing could have permanent health consequences for Frazier. Sometimes in investing, it's crucial to know when to cut your losses or take profits. Emotional attachment to an investment can lead to poor decisions, much like how fighters can get stuck in a battle they shouldn’t continue. Recognize when an investment is no longer serving your financial goals and be willing to exit gracefully, even if it’s difficult, to protect your financial well-being.🥊Just like the Thrilla in Manila became a classic for its intensity and tactics, investing requires a balance of endurance, adaptability, and smart decision-making to come out on top. Have a good plan, and execute it when life and the markets increase their intensity and throw body blows and haymakers.

🗓️ On September 26, 1960, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon faced off in the first-ever televised presidential debate, altering the role of media in politics.

The debate was broadcast live, reaching around 70 million viewers. It featured both candidates standing at podiums, answering questions from a panel of journalists. Kennedy, the Democratic candidate, appeared calm, confident, and well-prepared. His youthful and charismatic appearance, coupled with his polished speaking style, resonated with the TV audience. He wore a dark suit, which contrasted well with the studio’s lighting, and looked directly at the camera, giving a sense of connection with viewers. Nixon, the Republican candidate, who had recently recovered from a knee injury and refused makeup, appeared pale under the bright studio lights. He also wore a gray suit that blended poorly with the backdrop and was generally less comfortable on camera than Kennedy. The exchange between the candidates, respectful but pointed,  illustrated the power of television as a medium. While radio listeners tended to think Nixon had won based on content and arguments, television viewers overwhelmingly favored Kennedy, primarily due to his strong visual presence. This debate is considered one of the key moments that helped Kennedy win the closely contested election. The 1960 debate revolutionized American political campaigning, emphasizing the importance of image and media presence. It showed that television could shape public perception of candidates beyond their policy positions. Ever since, debates have become a staple of U.S. presidential elections, and candidates have paid increasing attention to their media image. And you can certainly see that policy positions mean less than it used to and image means more. Not exactly progress.       As we head into the silly season of elections with a little more than six weeks to go, we are left to digest the second presidential debate. Or was it the first? Even that is subject to debate! Does the outcome, however you saw it, matter for your portfolio? Probably not. A survey from the Pew Research Center asking Americans how they feel about economic conditions, shows that Republicans often feel better about the economy under a Republican president. Similarly, Democrats often feel better about the economy under a Democratic president. Well, duh. I mean, this is an example of confirmation bias. You will look for information confirming your bias, and you will ignore what goes against it. And if your team is the Republicans, you're going to naturally feel better because you're finding information that confirms your bias that, hey, things are pretty good. If your team is the Democrats, you're going to do likewise. It's natural. It's part of the human brain, so don't feel badly about it and don't hold it against other people. Just realize that it does happen, and this perception is not reality. Performance is relatively close, no matter the combination of who wins the White House.  You wouldn't hold your nose up at average returns under either party. My fellow Americans, loving or hating the government or those running it is not an investment plan. That is pretty black and white, which is about the only thing this election season has in common with the 1960 version.

On September 21, 1937,  J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit was published by the British publishing house of George Allen & Unwin.  

        Publication marked a seminal moment in fantasy literature that paved the way for The Lord of the Rings series of books. Movies and television series followed decades later. The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, a quiet and unadventurous hobbit who meets the wizard Gandalf and a group of thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. Bilbo joins them on a quest to reclaim the dwarves' lost homeland, the Lonely Mountain, and its treasure from the dragon Smaug. Along the way, they face numerous challenges, including trolls, goblins, wolves, and giant spiders. In one key moment, Bilbo separates from the group and discovers a magical ring that grants him invisibility. He also meets the creature Gollum, who possesses the ring but unknowingly loses it to Bilbo. Eventually, this motley group defeats Smaug, and the dwarves reclaim the mountain, but their greed for the treasure causes tension with the locals, who also seek compensation for their losses. A conflict nearly erupts until an even greater threat attacks, making fast friends out of near foes. Bilbo, having completed the adventure, returns home to the Shire, forever changed by his experiences but content to live a peaceful life again.The underlying themes of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien are rich and varied, exploring concepts of heroism, friendship, growth, and the battle between good and evil. Here are three lessons for the modern investor from the lands of Middle Earth:1. The Hero’s Journey is not for everyone. Bilbo Baggins begins as a timid, comfort-loving hobbit but evolves into a brave and resourceful hero. The novel follows his transformation through trials, highlighting the theme of growth through adventure and adversity. And yet, when all is said and done  (and in Tolkien’s works plenty is said / written),  Bilbo decides to return to a quiet life and forget all about adventures. Bilbo Baggins was initially all for taking risks to get worldly and perhaps wealthy, the rewards seemingly well worth it. Then he endured those very risks and found the rewards insufficient to make him ever do it again. Understanding the Risk Premium, how much you would need to earn in return for exposing yourself to peril, is the key for those of us who are merely risking our personal fortunes and not our lives. Over the long term, taking on more risks should mean bigger rewards than taking few or more moderate ones, otherwise, there is no incentive to leave the Shire at all. Can’t handle the periodic adventures to the downside? Then it is okay to avoid them. Stay home. Be boring. But realize that without some risk, your overall returns are destined to be boring too, and so might the retirement for which you are saving.            2. Greed has its consequences.The desire for treasure, particularly the hoard of the dragon Smaug, represents the destructive power of greed. Thorin's obsession with reclaiming his ancestral wealth leads to conflict and tragedy, emphasizing how material greed can corrupt even noble causes. Investors tend to worry about risk when markets are frothy and focus on returns when the bourses are becalmed. They forget that the two are related. In other words, being greedy increases your risks at all the wrong times. 3. You can’t control all of the variables.  Chance and fate play a significant role, especially when Bilbo finds the One Ring. Tolkien emphasizes the role of unseen forces guiding events for a greater purpose. This theme carries into The Lord of the Rings, where Bilbo’s discovery of the Ring has far-reaching consequences. Your decisions also have future consequences too. So be sure you know what you can control (planning, strategies, tactics) versus what you can’t (politics, market forces, volatility.)   Focus on getting that one ring…I mean one thing…right. The relationships formed among Bilbo, the dwarves, and characters like Gandalf underscore the importance of companionship and good counsel. These bonds give Bilbo the strength to face his fictional challenges, but a good relationship with an advisor can help you face yours in the real world.

On September 14th, 1752, the British Empire adopted the Gregorian calendar, skipping 11 days from September 2 to September 14 to align with most of Europe.

The Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to reform the Julian calendar, which had been in use since 45 BCE. Established by Julius Caesar, it set the year at 365.25 days, with a leap year every four years. However, the actual solar year is approximately 365.2422 days, causing the calendar to drift by about 11 minutes per year. Over centuries, this slight difference accumulated, leading to a discrepancy of about ten days by the 16th century. That calendar drift was causing issues with calculating important dates, particularly Easter, which was based on the vernal equinox. The Council of Trent (1545–1563) recognized the need for calendar reform to bring Easter back in line with the original date set by the First Council of Nicaea in 325. Pope Gregory XIII, with the help of astronomers and mathematicians, including Aloysius Lilius and Christopher Clavius, introduced a more accurate leap year system. A year is a leap year if divisible by 4, but century years (e.g., 1700, 1800) are only leap years if divisible by 400. This adjustment reduced the error to 1 day in about 3,300 years. The Gregorian calendar was initially adopted by Catholic countries such as Spain, Portugal, and Italy in 1582. Protestant and Orthodox countries were slower to adopt the change due to religious and political reasons. Russia did not switch until after the Russian Revolution of 1918, and Greece only adopted it in 1923. Over time, the Gregorian calendar became the international standard for civil use. However, some religious communities still follow other calendars for liturgical purposes (e.g., the Hebrew, Islamic, and Orthodox Julian calendars). Today, the Gregorian calendar is widely used worldwide for secular purposes, and it remains the most accurate long-term calendar system in use.        Last week, we had a significant adjustment to the annual employment data in the United States, and those who didn’t follow the data collection methodology closely decried the discrepancy. Using the Gregorian calendar as an example, here are several lessons for the Modern Investor regarding statistical sampling in government data: 

* Reports are a representation of reality, but they are not reality. Just as the Gregorian calendar was introduced to more accurately represent the true length of the solar year (365.2422 days), statistical sampling in government data aims to accurately reflect and predict the population or phenomenon being studied. Inaccurate data collection methods, similar to the inaccuracies of the Julian calendar, can lead to long-term drift or bias in results. It happens all the time. The details matter. Yet many economic statistics are published based on the presumption that one-third of the data is enough to predict all of it. For instance, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the market value of goods and services produced within the country, is used to measure our overall all economic growth or contraction. Three estimates are provided each quarter for GDP; the advance estimate only contains data for the first month, while the other two are inferred using statistical means. Likewise, after two months, the third month is extrapolated, and the first estimate is struck from the record. Even after the quarter concludes, there are revisions years later due to data that is deduced at first and replaced later with real figures. So GDP, like the employment figures,  is both closely watched and subject to significant revisions, which is not a great combination.

* Statisticians attempt to balance simplicity with precision, never achieving either. The Gregorian calendar's leap year rule balances simplicity (a leap year every four years) and precision (skipping specific century years), making it more accurate and more usable but still slightly flawed. Government statisticians have limited resources, so their efforts will never be perfect either. Don’t give too much weight to initial impressions. 

* The delays can be dangerous. The Gregorian calendar took centuries to be adopted globally, leading to misalignments in international schedules. Similarly, when agencies inevitably delay updating their statistical data, it can lead to real-world discrepancies and confusion for investors.  Remember, the initial picture is only the initial picture, and you need to make sure the ensuing revisions are on your calendar. 

* The biases build up over time.  The Gregorian reform corrected a long-standing bias in the Julian calendar, which accumulated over centuries. Similarly, in government data, improper or outdated sampling methods can lead to biases in the data that may accumulate over time. Initial biases in recent employment reports seem to be initially on the upside, and then to moderate as data accrues.  Understanding these biases can help you properly weigh the impact of imperfect data. 

* You must adjust for rare events. The Gregorian calendar introduced adjustments for leap years (and century years) to handle the complexity of the Earth's orbit. In statistical sampling, rare events or outliers may need special consideration, as these can skew results if not accounted for. Statisticians develop sampling methods that can appropriately account for rare but impactful occurrences in the data. But it can take some time. So, it is good practice for those evaluating data to know about things like colder-than-normal winter months, striking workers, or supply chain disruptions.
