The First Charter of Virginia, issued by King James the first on April 10, 1606, stands as a pivotal document in the history of English colonization in North America. It provided the legal framework and authorization for the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in what would becomethe United States. This charter created the Virginia Company, a joint-stock company designed to finance and manage the ambitious undertaking of establishing colonies in the New World.
