THE "LET'S LISTEN" VAPORWAVE PODCAST.
Vaporwave is an art aesthetic that embodies the anxiety, disillusionment, and nihilism of the modern world.
In music form, vaporwave dives deep into these unconscious anxieties, manifesting sounds from past decades - warping them, manipulating them, and summoning the ghost of the good times that were promised by modern capitalism, but never came.
Vaporwave is an expression of the pains of the collective modern unconscious, taking the form of heroin-level escapism, ecstasy-inducing pop music, or dystopian ambient worlds.
Because of its internet-based nature, its aesthetics have evolved so rapidly, further reflecting the chaotic subconscious of the modern mind.
Vaporwave captures the modern unconscious of humans raised by the internet succinctly, and understanding this art form matters.
In each episode, we listen to tracks that make up genre and give our thoughts, analysis, emotions, and commentary on them. Let's set sail on the Virtual Ocean.
And now, for today’s episode.
VCR-Classique’s album “Atlantic Memories” is water-themed classic vaporwave record that has brought us much joy and relaxation.
VCR-Classique is part of the business casual vaporwave label, which is one of the most prolific vaporwave labels to date.
This record uses plunderphonics, a musical style that takes existing sounds and samples and creates its own composition out of them. This technique is almost signature to vaporwave because of its nature as an art form that reforms content of the past.
This particular record though, transports you into a relaxed state of floating on a nice cool ocean under a perfect sky.
This was a gorgeous album to escape into and we hope you can join us.

Once again, we have been pulled into the future funk label NeonCity Records for another BANGER.
Today’s episode is an album just came out: it is Momo Club by Desired.
This future funk album is tight, smooth, and syrupy sweet… the most intriguing part of this record is its soft concept though.
“Momo Club” seems to be inspired by the dark side of being a celebrity idol; the drugs, the excess, and sometimes, the suicide.
Did I just say suicide? Yes. I’m not kidding.
You’re just gonna have to listen to see what I mean.
Let’s set sail for Desired’s Momo Club.

In 2016, a collaboration between Vaperror, a Vaportrap pioneer, and telepath, the prolific leader in ambient vaporwave, was born.
This album is a quintessential record of the vaporwave subgenre and microcosm known as “slushwave.
Slushwave is a subgenre that is attached to the prolific artist telepath, known for its heavily layered tracks and long runtimes.
We have covered telepath many times before on this show, and in this album, the collaboration with the vaportrap pioneer vaperror creates a thick, unique, and sedative aesthetic.
Come chill with us.
Let’s set sail for Terre Vape’s album, “Forever.”

We dive into the second LP of upcoming vaporwave artist Ahero, titled SPIRIT.
In this album, Ahero takes a fresh spin on the ambient vaporwave sounds.
Ahero, using his cunning compositional abilities, crafts an ambient world of his own but filled with life, rhythm, and optimism.
A perfect form of escape in the year 2020.
Let’s set sail for Ahero’s SPIRIT.

Brandon and I had the pleasure of discovering a vaporwave up-and-coming artist.
With only 2 LPs to his belt, Ahero has delivered a promising take on vaporwave by taking the classic sounds from the early era of the music genre (early, being only 6 years ago by the way) and adding his own blend of expertise as a hip-hop producer.
Ahero is an artist you should have on your radar and we would love for you to listen to him with us.
Let’s set sail for Ahero’s Ultima Flux.

What is vaporwave?
Vaporwave is a music genre (and internet meme) that appropriates mood music from the past while presenting subtle takes on modern-day consumerist culture. The genre has drawn many passionate listeners with its powerful immersion, ambiguous commentaries, and the genre's unique ability to amalgamate with the memes created as its byproduct.
It's a genre with several subgenres that are extremely distinct from one another in sound and style; and yet evoke similar archetypal ideas that say, either explicitly or implicitly, a lot about the modern world.
It's also very, very, aesthetic.

With the world in a state of erupted chaos, and with our social media feeds constantly injecting the new civil war straight into our minds from the comfort of our beds, sometimes you just need something to a taste of some thing a little… smooth.
This week, we had the pleasure of listening to one of an insanely pleasing future funk albums from the Brazilian artist Pop Up!, part of the Business Casual vaporware label
This future funk album is indeed the sonic equivalent of a perfect vanilla ice cream cone on a hot day; giving you that concentrated euphoria you come to expect from the genre with some fantastic compositional twists.
And to be honest, there are a few tracks in this album that me and Brandon would consider genre best’s

The world will never be the same.
With this COVID epidemic, the old lifestyles we had in the past are gone, and if we do get them back, we’ll forever be carrying the scars of what this changed world has left us.
This feeling is perfectly captured in the this week’s album, Mission Indigo’s “The Final Exhibit.”
This album carries themes of finality; bringing you to the end of the old world and an arising of the new.
While this theme is something we’ve covered in past albums, like telepath’s “to the future” and “building a better world”, this album takes the approach of more traditional 80s sounds, all of which are done tastefully - utilizing smart arrangements and evoking potent emotions.
You’re just going to have to listen with us to see what we mean.

Today, we will be concluding our journey into the elevators of Stevia Sphere.
We will be listening to the last 2 tapes of the Elevator Relaxation Tapes series.
These two tapes just solidify to us that this series of vaporware EPs are 100% a sleeper hit.
This project contains one of the best plot twists story-wise and musically that we’ve ever seen in a vaporwave project.
What is it?
Well, you’re just going to have to sail with us to find out.
Let’s set sail for Stevia Sphere’s Elevator Relaxation Tapes 3 and 4: The Future, and The End.

Vaportrap. The beautiful marriage between the chill, ambient vibes of vaporwave and the power and kinetics of trap music.
And now, for today’s episode.
I think Brandon and I are proud to say that we’ve found another gem in the vaporwave space.
Only 7 tracks in, we’ve grown SUPER invested in the works of Stevia Sphere’s Elevator Relaxation Tapes.
This series of of short EPs based around an interesting concept: A bill was passed in the year 2046 where elevators must move a slow pace to allow workers time to rest, as “work collides with sleep” in this world.
The concept isn’t the only interesting part of this project. It’s the music.
This is one of the tightest ambient music we’ve conceptually gotten to listen to, and you will find yourself relaxed, calm, and in a state of euphoria with these tracks.
You’re going to have to listen with us to find out what we mean.

But now, for today’s episode.
We will be exploring the subgenere of mallsoft once again.
Mallsoft, in case you didn’t know, is a subgenre of vaporwave that takes mall muzak, reverbed and washed out to create a lucid dream like feel, as though you are actually walking through the virtual plaza.
Today’s album is a mallsoft banger that goes by the name of High Fashion. This album by Leisure Centre is an ambient artist from the Toronto label Adhesive Sounds.
This album takes us on a journey to a hazy, lucid dream. In this dream, we stay in a relaxed, calm, hypnotized state, moving to different areas of this mall and just losing ourselves completely to sounds of a utopian ambience.
You’re just going to have to listen with us to see what we mean.
Let’s set sail for Leisure Centre’s High Fashion.
