I spent a chunk of the last few weeks reading law firm websites properly, across family, personal injury, wills and estates, commercial and criminal. Not skimming them, reading them the way a person with a problem would read them late at night, and then again the way a machine would.
I went in assuming I would find bad websites. They were mostly fine. Well built, accurate, and plenty of them had clearly cost real money.
The same four things were wrong on almost every single one. The opening paragraph is about the firm rather than the problem. The state is never named in the body of the article. Nobody's name is on it, and one byline simply said Admin. And everything is hedged until there is no sentence left plain enough to quote.
I also went looking for the technical explanation, because firms are currently being offered AI optimisation packages with monthly fees attached, and Google's own documentation says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations necessary.

Somewhere in Brisbane on a Tuesday night, at about half past ten, somebody opens their phone and types a question they would not say out loud to another person yet. It is not the name of a law firm and it is not even the word lawyer.
This episode follows that search from the inside, from the diagnostic question a person actually types through to the follow up where they ask who they should talk to, which is the moment your firm is either in the answer or absent from it.
I go through what has changed in the numbers, including SparkToro's finding that 68 per cent of Google searches now end without a click, what AI Overviews do to the click through rate on the top organic result, and why a report showing flat sessions is not telling you that your content failed.
There is also the change I have made to my own client reporting this year, and the forty minute monthly check any firm can run for itself.

Every client who walks into your office arrives with roughly the same five questions, and you have answered every one of them hundreds of times, which is exactly why it has never occurred to you that the answers are worth publishing.
This episode covers the five as clients actually phrase them, why they outperform anything else you could write, how to answer them so a frightened person reads to the end, and the professional anxiety about giving away advice that stops most firms before they start.
What we cover
What to do this week
Write your five, in the words your clients actually use when they ask, then rank them by how often you get asked and answer the one at the top. Talk it into your phone if writing is the barrier, which it usually is.

For family lawyer plus a suburb, the map pack sits above everything and frequently decides the whole thing before any website is seen, and it runs on a Google Business Profile that most firms claimed years ago and never opened again. This is the practical episode, covering what actually moves the map pack, how to reply to reviews including the bad one, what to post when you think you have nothing, and the thirty minute tidy that starts it.
WHAT WE COVER
- The map pack as the front page of your suburb
- The shopfront nobody inside the firm ever looks at
- The plain, unglamorous things that move it
- How to reply to reviews, including a hostile one
- How relevance, distance and prominence decide the three
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK
The thirty minute tidy, then ten minutes a week.

Clients are choosing a person to sit with them through the worst period of their lives, and most law firm websites hand them a logo instead. This episode makes the case for the principal's face as the most powerful trust asset a practice owns, and gives a straight answer to the sentence that stops everybody, which is that nobody is good on camera in take one and the only difference is who pressed record anyway.
WHAT WE COVER
- The trust maths of ninety seconds of video against a first meeting
- Why hiding the people hides a small firm's whole advantage
- The take one truth, and why the pause is credibility
- The dignity question and the professional exposure question
- What to actually film
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK
One video, phone on a stack of books, your most asked client question, keep the last take. You do not have to publish it.

Our reviews are excellent, so we're fine online. It is the most common thing law firm principals say about being found, and half of it is true while the other half is quietly costing them clients they never hear about. This episode covers what reviews do brilliantly, the one thing they mechanically cannot do, the two minute test that shows you which layer your firm is missing, and why the gap is widening rather than closing as AI answers arrive.
WHAT WE COVER
- Why reviews win at the moment of decision, and where they legitimately help rankings
- Why they cannot rank you for the searches clients actually run
- The two search test, and what the contrast tells you
- Why the blog you tried once did not work
- How published content and reviews feed each other
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK
Run the two search test, screenshot both, and publish the answer to the question where you were most absent.

NEXT EPISODE: why the principal's face is the most underused asset a law firm has.

Somebody recommended your firm at a barbecue on Saturday and meant it, and she still hasn't rung you. What happened in between is a check that almost every referred client now makes before they contact a law firm, and it either confirms everything they were told about you or quietly fails to, and either way you never find out it happened.
This episode is about the checkpoint sitting in the middle of every referral you will ever receive, why the loss leaves no trace anywhere in your practice, and what a presence that closes a referral actually looks like.
What we cover
What to do this week
Open a browser you are not signed into and look yourself up the way that friend from the barbecue would. Your firm's name, then your own name, then family lawyer plus your suburb. Ask one question of what you see, which is whether it confirms what she was just told about you.

Next episode: why five star reviews cannot make your firm findable.

Review enough law firm websites in a short space of time and something strange happens. You stop taking individual notes, because you're writing the same five things every time.
This episode walks all five gaps: unanswered client questions, an untended Google profile, a faceless firm, a frozen clock, and a presence that fails to confirm the firm's real reputation. Then the harder question: why they survive in smart, well-run practices, and why nobody inside the firm can see them.
WHAT WE COVER:
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK:
The wince test. Open your own website and Google profile and read the list against them. One gap will make you wince harder than the others. That's your starting point, because it's the gap you already suspected.

People now ask AI tools to recommend lawyers, and the answers are built entirely from the published record. Firms with a real content footprint exist in those answers. Firms with a brochure website gave the AI nothing, so they get nothing. This episode covers how the mechanism works, why it lands hardest in family law, why nobody can game it, and the first page to publish.
WHAT WE COVER:
- The new front page: answers instead of links
- How AI decides which firms exist
- Why private AI chats are where family law research is moving
- Why there's no ad slot and no trick, and what that means
- The ninety second baseline test for your own firm
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK:
Ask an AI your clients' three most common questions plus who it recommends in your area. Note the answer. Then publish a
clear answer to your most-asked question on your site. The record gets built one page at a time.

A lot of good professionals never become visible because marketing their expertise feels like exploiting other people's pain. This episode is about how to be found without being tacky, especially for family law and other sensitive work. The answer is to stop thinking about promotion and start thinking about clarity for frightened people.
WHAT WE COVER:
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK:
Take one piece of content, yours or a firm's you admire, and ask a single question: does this centre the client and their understanding, or the firm and the fight? If it's the second, rewrite it to lead with the client's situation.
