EP#20: Are you taking more risk than the return you're receiving? Even if you have an advisor, do your own research to find this out.

Large market cap companies doesn't necessarily mean the stock is a good investment. Take a look at what's happened to IBM over the past 40 years. You would have annualized around 3% return (not including dividend).

Deere & Co. (DE) stock on the other hand, has annualized around 20% over the past 5 years. It made the list in January 2023 but did not in October 2023.

Costco (COST) stock has annualized ~19% return over the past 5 years with ~15% risk. It also made the list in January 2023 but not in October 2023.

This can be used as a stock screener but remember to do your own research. Changes over just 9 months is short term and this doesn't mean that the next 9 months will look the same.

Just because a company has performed well, doesn't mean it has low risk or that it will continue.

What strategies do you have in place, or will you be putting in place if you think this could be coming too?

Below are some factors I look at in our Recession Warning model:

Most of these indicators are also closely looked at by NBER and The Federal Reserve too, to determine how close we are to a recession.

Industrial production is below averages in November 2023 and was negative in October 2023.

Housing Units Started has been declining slowly over the past 2 years.

Fed Funds Rate may appear that inflation is under control. Let's see what happens over the next few months.

Will unemployment stay low or will we start seeing an uptick that adds more strain on the economy in 2024?

This is possible if you do your research properly, including fundamental analysis, correlations, monthly return distributions and investing into different sectors.

When you understand where we are in recession cycles, you can determine if it's a good time to have cash available. Additionally, you will know whether your stocks are down because of microeconomics or macroeconomics (like a recession). This makes it easy to buy stocks at discounts if you've properly done your research.

As the S&P 500 approaches its all time high, it's important to be aware of past patterns around recessions.

During the past 8 recessions dating back to the 1960s, the S&P 500 has declined an average of 23.8% from the start of the recession to the low point in it when looking at monthly data.

While the S&P 500 has historically made an average return of about 5-10% annually over the long term (depending on when you invested in it), there are many companies in it that aren't strong.

It's easy and common to invest into companies without valuing the business.

By relying solely on someone else's stock predictions, you take away that power and your seat at the table of your own wealth.

You can value a business better by creating more accurate assumptions in your stock predictions. The more you understand about a business and it's core operations, the better predictions you will be able to make. Learn what the company's competitive advantages are too before investing into them.
