Jay Steinfeld, the author of Lead From The Core: The 4 Principles for Profit and Prosperity, is joining me on “The Voice of Job Seekers LIVE.” His company Blinds.com was the world’s largest e-commerce site until he sold it to Home Depot. He’s an Inc. Magazine online contributor and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business.

As long you’re respectful, self-expression is essential and part of Jay’s three core values
“If they don’t give you that voice if they don’t give you the opportunity to say what you want. Then you’re going to look elsewhere because they don’t respect you. “
If you’re transient and move from place to place, consider your network to help you find opportunities.
You will have more fun working for an employer whose core values align with yours.
“The missions can change the direction that you go can change. But the core values, don’t the core values stay true because they are core. That’s what drives your behavior.”
Jay says that servant leadership is to make that decision and to provide whatever tools, money, support, technology, processes, and capital allocation to make sure that that happens. If you say you will but won’t, the work won’t happen.
If you make emotional and trust deposits, you can make withdrawals as a leader.

A military follower asked me about federal resumes. I wrote federal resumes for a big client, but not recently. I asked colleagues in a Facebook group I’m a part of, and Robin Schlinger emerged as someone whose reputation and work proceeded her. I’ve known about Robin’s work for years through other colleagues and resume writers in the space. She was so generous in offering a mini-workshop hybrid with a conversation to introduce USAJobs.com, the primary site to find federal jobs. Companies are declaring that they don’t want resumes anymore. Jack clarified that one company wants to get rid of resumes only to write it their way.
Some companies eliminated some of their criteria to hire quicker for the holiday rush.
Robin’s point: Although mastering how to come across on video is essential, many people, including C-Suite candidates, are terrible at it.
Hannah’s point: Recruiters are super overwhelmed. The hiring process is not getting faster but is slowing down. And if they have a lot of jobs to fill, they have to reinvent, make the process different.
Jack’s point: For job seekers and people who work, they’re going to gravitate to the ones I think most want to be respected, appreciated, and valued. And so they’re going to go in that direction.
Companies can no longer separate their management style from prioritizing connection with employees.
Listening is the operative word, and that’s the one thing companies should do and be responsive to. Don’t be passive on these things as you’re just trying to appease, to get people to open up. You think that’s going to be the magic wand, and it doesn’t work that way.
