Why would someone want to murder the father he never knew?
After Peter Körber is stabbed to death in Berlin, his son, Andreas, leaves Denmark, where he was raised by his mother and stepfather, and travels to that once-divided city to uncover the brutal truth. In his search to know this complete stranger, Andreas hopes to come to grips with his own identity crisis, stalled academic career, and failed relationship.
But what kind of man was his father? A complicated portrait begins to emerge concerning Peter's role in the German Democratic Republic before reunification. As Andreas struggles to find a chink in the wall of secrets and lies that obscures the real Peter Körber, he brings to light disturbing revelations that open fresh wounds and have devastating consequences.
Gripping and profoundly moving, The Wall Between is a haunting novel of the harsh realities of living under a repressive regime, the price of blind allegiance to ideology, and the moral complexity of personal culpability.

Tragic but beautifully written and translated. Recommend!

This is an incredible translation. It is so smooth and elegant that the reader would never know it was not originally in English. Well done!
The story itself is so tragic. I love the title as it is apropos but also a theme. The walls that exist in families to protect and hide and shield are all explored throughout the story.
The author creates a tale of a father who never knows his son and weaves with the story of a son who never knows his father. There is a tertiary tale of a man who has lost everything. All three men are alone, hurting, and have felt tremendous loss in their lives. All three men are suffering day to day and feel little purpose to their lives.
I imagine the author had to do a lot of research in preparing to write this book. The descriptions of emotion, color, and feelings were quite vivid. While the actual story is not relatable for me, I did feel connected to the characters because the author gave them all such complexity. I felt I understood each character's motivation.
In the end, each character was always trying to do the right thing even if it really wasn't the right thing in hindsight. How sad that doing the right thing set into motion terrible loss, pain, suffering, and a web of lies. I was definitely drawn into the story, mostly by the alternating storylines and time periods. This kept the pace of the book even and flowing.
Readers who enjoy historical fiction (though this is a bit more recent), stories with depth, and excellent prose will appreciate this book.
