    Title: Beyond Fort Mims
    Subtitle: A Western Story

    Narrator: Jack Garrett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-01-17
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The massacre at Fort Mims is what spurred young Davy Crockett to leave his family and become a volunteer scout in the military campaign between American militias and the Creek Indians. It was while serving in this capacity that Crockett earned his reputation as a first-rate scout, which added to his already established reputation as a crack shot.
Like many volunteers serving in militias, Crockett also had to concern himself with protecting his wife, his children, and his land from roaming Indian war parties and gangs of frontier renegades who used the distraction of wars to attack and pillage those left behind.
It was in these skirmishes that Davy Crockett distinguished himself. It was a chaotic and dangerous time on the frontier, and Davy Crockett and his family seemed to have a ringside seat in the midst of the action.

Wonderful Christmas mystery -- great read for Dickens fans!
I read this book for a book group discussion. I really enjoyed revisiting the Artful Dodger (with his family in this book -- his adopted son is the book's protagonist). The Victorian setting and details are fascinating, and the characterizations are rich. This was a wonderful Christmas read, and I'm sure I will reread it again in the future.
    the artful one
Another smash hit, bringing dickens character the artful dodger alive with a new twist,no pun intended

    An Incredible Roman Read!
This fantastic book by Nick Brown is the 5th instalment of the wonderful and exciting "Agent of Rome" series.
The historical details concerning this great story are superbly explained within the author's note at the end of the book.
At the beginning of the book you'll find a wonderful map of the Roman empire in AD 273, and also you'll fine a nice explanation about the use of Time and Money.
The story itself is set in the year AD 273, and our main character, Imperial Agent Cassius Corbulo, finds himself in Bostria in the Province of Arabia, along with friends and companions, his personal bodyguard Indavara and his servant Simo, when all of a sudden at the beginning of the tale they are all attacked by three assailants who are trying to assassinate them, with especially Cassius Corbulo as their main objective, or so it seems.
After their near escape with death Cassius Corbulo is sent north by Emperor Aurelian's deputy to smash down a counterfeiting gang.
When they eventually track them down, after much civil unrest and uncooperative officials, which will hamper their investigations temporarily, and also from immense pressure from superiors, Cassius Corbulo and his companions close in on the gang.
What will follow is a very gripping story with thrilling pictured battle scenes, along with great interaction between all the characters, and all this told in a fascinating delightful style, all these factors combined are making this tale such a fabulous book to read.
Very much recommended, for this is for sure "An Incredible Roman Read"!
    Another winner
After some harrowing and dangerous assignments, Cassius Corbulo is looking forward to a seemingly less life threatening job that will utilize his growing investigative skills. So, along with his imposing bodyguard Indavara and his Christian slave Simo, Corbulo heads to the town of Berytus to uncover a counterfeiting ring. Seemingly is the operative word in the opening sentence as the situation in this small peaceful town is hardly that. Civil unrest, dangerous counterfeiters and a mysterious group of perceived assassins who have followed our trio make for some exciting action while Corbulo meets dead end after dead end looking for the counterfeiting gang.
The most intriguing aspects of this the 5th volume in the Agent of Rome series is the continual growth of the the three main characters, especially of Simo and Indavara. Simo's ever growing faith puts him at loggerheads with Corbulo on numerous occasions.

But as war approaches, a decision is made which calls all their lives shockingly into question.
Moving between the isolated beauty of the moors, a hill-town school and a graceful old country house, Trio explores conscience and idealism, love and desire, and the power of music to disturb, uplift and affirm.
    Members Reviews:
A book that draws you in quietly.
Grief is hard to write about well. It can quickly descend into parody or empty melodrama. This story allows you the luxury, if that is a correct word to use in this context, of one year in the life of a man mourning the sudden, tragic death of his young wife. Evocatively using the long days of bitter winter cold, we gradually witness a thaw, both in the season and his life.
Loss and longing and love. So much love
I reached into this jewel box of a novel and pulled out a bouquet of cow parsley and a starched handkerchief. Heard the call of curlews, the bawling of lambs, the strains of a Mendelssohn trio. Felt the cold of a stone cottage on the moors and the heat of a crackling fire in an old country house called Hepplewick. Hot tea from heavy silver. Forsythia blossoms floating in rain puddles. A grand piano and a grandfather clock. An ancient resinous cedar tree hung with a swing. Capability Brown and a ha-ha. Beethoven, Brahms, Elgar. A shell-shocked veteran of the Somme weeping at a Christmas concert. Letters written on heavy cream stock. Loss and longing and love. So much love. Read this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Why would someone want to murder the father he never knew?
After Peter Körber is stabbed to death in Berlin, his son, Andreas, leaves Denmark, where he was raised by his mother and stepfather, and travels to that once-divided city to uncover the brutal truth. In his search to know this complete stranger, Andreas hopes to come to grips with his own identity crisis, stalled academic career, and failed relationship.
But what kind of man was his father? A complicated portrait begins to emerge concerning Peter's role in the German Democratic Republic before reunification. As Andreas struggles to find a chink in the wall of secrets and lies that obscures the real Peter Körber, he brings to light disturbing revelations that open fresh wounds and have devastating consequences.
Gripping and profoundly moving, The Wall Between is a haunting novel of the harsh realities of living under a repressive regime, the price of blind allegiance to ideology, and the moral complexity of personal culpability.

Tragic but beautifully written and translated. Recommend!
***I won this book via the Goodreads Giveaway program. This has not influenced my opinion.***
This is an incredible translation. It is so smooth and elegant that the reader would never know it was not originally in English. Well done!
The story itself is so tragic. I love the title as it is apropos but also a theme. The walls that exist in families to protect and hide and shield are all explored throughout the story.
The author creates a tale of a father who never knows his son and weaves with the story of a son who never knows his father. There is a tertiary tale of a man who has lost everything. All three men are alone, hurting, and have felt tremendous loss in their lives. All three men are suffering day to day and feel little purpose to their lives.
I imagine the author had to do a lot of research in preparing to write this book. The descriptions of emotion, color, and feelings were quite vivid. While the actual story is not relatable for me, I did feel connected to the characters because the author gave them all such complexity. I felt I understood each character's motivation.
In the end, each character was always trying to do the right thing even if it really wasn't the right thing in hindsight. How sad that doing the right thing set into motion terrible loss, pain, suffering, and a web of lies. I was definitely drawn into the story, mostly by the alternating storylines and time periods. This kept the pace of the book even and flowing.
Readers who enjoy historical fiction (though this is a bit more recent), stories with depth, and excellent prose will appreciate this book.
