In Revolutionary France, Jeanette and her mother are caught in a trap. They have little choice but to enter the murky world of low men who would rule France. Navigating such waters is not an easy feat, because even the ones who rise high above their former station harbor secrets, and those secrets can get them and their protégées killed.
Ultimately, Jeanette and Henriette find their final refuge with the dregs of the Earth, the future elite of Napoleon, the French Army stationed in Italy. And there Jeanette finds not only her old, relentless enemies, but war and romance. Will Jeanette survive and find a place in the world of men?

Detailed and deep, this is a novel for lovers of Historical Fiction. Beautiful!
You know when a book starts with a compilation of People, their descriptions and their roles, that the details matter. Such is the case with Alaric Longwardâs âReign of Fear: Cantiniére Tales â Book 1.â
This expansive tale is a history lesson wrapped around a war, topped with intrigue and a family on the brink of greatness. The first thing I learned was that a Cantiniére is part of military family, a woman who sells men looted victuals and much needed goods, including medicines, books, tobacco, etc. Jeanette Bexa is such a woman, formed by the steel of the Revolution and hardened by the drums of said war.
Written as a tale shared with a loved, yet unmet Granddaughter, this is Jeanetteâs and her Motherâs, Henriette, story; how their family fell apart, how they found the army, the struggles they faced, their love, their loss, the triumphs and the bitter betrayals. Sweeping and myriad, this novel screams across history, bringing to life a War few of us can imagine, much less comprehend. Longward wields an educated pen, drawing the lessons clear and harsh for us to see, while softening the blow with an epic too good to put down.
Wonderfully written with rich characters and verifiable (I googled quite a few things!) facts, this is a book meant to be savored, and shared. Book 2 canât come soon enough.
It was difficult for me to relate to the narrator ...
It was difficult for me to relate to the narrator. She seemed harsh and unbelievably coarse, even given the circumstances of her life. Her unrepentant killing of her cousin seemed illogical for a girl unaccustomed to such deeds. Consequently, when one doesn't feel empathy for the main character, the whole story is less meaningful.
Revolution, isolation, persecution, imprisonment, war, revenge
Why wouldnât you want to walk alongside a young girl who matures into hot-headed, cooly-reflective, beautiful, adventurous, impulsive plotter like Jeanette Baxa! And meet the boys and men who love her, betray her, attack her, plunder with her, protect her, and are eternally shocked by her? Youâll feel the same way, I think, and admire her asserted self-hood. She redefines her connections to each of them in ways that at once protect her soul and endanger it, inspiring each manâs trust, anger, and for some, betrayal.
