    Great story!
Always a great story from this author- this is one of his best, well read too.
    Really enjoyed.
    Dreadful !
What would have made A Hero of France better?
This book has absolutely no story. I enjoy books on the French Resistance but even I was willing myself not to resist giving this load of nonsense up. There is absolutely no plot whatsoever from start to finish. After 6 hours I could take no more, even with just an hour to go. It is a dreadful audible read. Avoid.
What was most disappointing about Alan Fursts story?
Their was no plot whatsoever. Nothing happened.
Did Peter Noble do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
Reader was fine. Far too many characters not actually doing anything.
What character would you cut from A Hero of France?
My mind was a haze with a soup of forgettable " characters ".
    Any additional comments?
    Wake me up.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1938, Hitler visits Italy. An expatriate Irish art historian is obliged to guide Mussolini and his guest around the galleries. Half fascinated, half repelled, he watches the tyrants, wrestling with the uneasy conviction that he ought to use the opportunity to "do something" about them yet lacking the zeal that might transform misgivings into action.
Thirty years later, his daughter comes across a compromising clipping showing her father with the dictators. Exposed as a collaborator, the narrator explains what happened, what he did and did not do, and why, revealing in the process the part the girl's mother played in promoting the digestive disorders that were to influence the course of the war.
To help his daughter understand, he conjures a time before the crime that would define the century, a time before these men became monsters inflated to fit that crime, showing her the tawdry little people behind the myths, the real Hitler and Mussolini, the Flatulent Windbag and the Constipated Prick.
Based on historical events and using the tyrants' own words, Hitler, Mussolini, and Me brings the dictators down to earth, describing the murkier, more scurrilous aspects of their careers, and using jokes and scatology to weave a crazed pathway toward a cracked kind of morality. It is the story of an ordinary man living in extraordinary times - times when being ordinary was an act of rebellion in itself.
    Members Reviews:
    Outstanding, hilarious and human
Absolutely wonderful, humanises the two dictators and highlights the fragility of human nature. It brings an wonderful insight into what it would have been like to be an ordinary citizen within those tumultuous times and the subsequent guilt by apathy of the rise of Mussolini and Hitler.

    Publisher's Summary:
Reunited brothers confront a secret Allied betrayal in postwar Munich.
Occupied Munich, 1946: Irina, a Cossack refugee, confesses to murdering a GI, but American captain Harry Kaspar doesn't buy it. As Harry scours the devastated city for the truth, it leads him to his long-lost German brother, Max, who returned to Hitler's Germany before the war.
Max has a questionable past, and he needs Harry for the cause that could redeem him: rescuing Irina's stranded clan of Cossacks who have been disowned by the Allies and are now being hunted by Soviet death squads - the cold-blooded upshot of a callous postwar policy.
As a harsh winter brews, the Soviets close in, and the Cold War looms, Harry and Max desperately plan for a risky last-ditch rescue on a remote stretch of the German-Czech border. A mysterious visitor from Max's darkest days shadows them. Everyone is suspect, including Harry's lover, Sabine, and Munich detective Hartmut Dietz - both of whom have pledged to help. But before the Kaspar brothers can save the innocent victims of peace, grave secrets and the deep contempt sown during the war threaten to damn them all.

    Excellent read!
Good historical oversight of damage done by politicians making politically correct decisions with no regard to damage done to people.
    Three Stars
Interesting fiction re chaos related to end of WW II in Germany; could have used more historical information.
Intriguing historical fiction set in post WWII Munich that reveals some of the darker secrets of post war policy.
Harry Kaspar serves as a Captain in the military government set up in Munich after the United States has occupied Germany. One night he answers a knock on his door to find a German police detective saying that a murder has been committed and a young girl is asking for him by name. Upon finding a man in old US fatigues with a sabre in his chest, he learns the girl knows his estranged brother, which he hasnât seen in years. In an effort to find out more about what the girl knows, he heads down a trail that reveals some ghost from his past as well as his brother Max. Harry learns that Ukrainian Cossacks are being shipped back to the Soviet Union against their will and are then slaughtered by Stalinâs agents. Outraged, Harry pledges to help, but who can he trust to help him see them to safety?
Iâm a huge fan of WWII history, fiction or non, but I have to admit that I havenât read much on the post occupation part. That is why this novel was so intriguing. However, I always felt like there was something more to the story that I was reading and discovered that there are two other novels out there, one dedicated to each brother.

Engaging journey into another world and time.
    Any additional comments?
I never lacked the right to vote. I never had my body controlled or owned by a husband or father. And, Ive never experienced being separated from others by a shocking physical difference.
Until, that is, I spent several hours in Reliance, Illinois, in the 1870s, experiencing life as a fatherless, indeed motherless, young girl with a face-to-torso port-wine birthmark. The audible version, brilliantly read by Sandy Rustin, was an amazing journey into another world and time.
An Interesting, and interestingly flawed, cast of characters weave their way through a gossamer web of secrets in a time often glossed over as not as dramatic as some others, while sewing the seeds of changes to come. For the eleven listening hours, Maddy, Miss. Rose, Rebecca, William, Handley all were family and will stay with me for a long time.

Winter's Pearl - Prologue to the Guy Winter Mysteries Series is a novella which sets the scene for the first full length Guy Winter mystery, entitled Winter's War.
Winter's Pearl is set in London in the first months of the Second World War during the period of the so-called 'Phoney War'.
It draws us into the complex world of Scotland Yard's most famous detective Guy Winter; the Mystery Man. So named because no other living detective has ever solved as many mysteries as Winter of the Yard. However, the great detective's fame and triumphs have come at a high cost.
Just when we think we've discovered our hero at his all-time low, it gets worse and it doesn't ever look like it is going to get better. Who needs enemies when your friends are on somebody else's side?

    Nice introduction to the series
I liked this book. I wish I had read this one before I had read the first "official" book of the series, since this one really help set the scene and explained a lot of what happened in the background of book #1 (Winter's War). This book takes place during the beginning of WWII, and its interesting to see how prostitutes, or "Pearls", were used to gather information by the British Intelligence. I listened to the Audible audio book narrated by Malanie Fraser, and she did a great job. I really liked that she has a lower or mid-range voice for a female narrator, and she has great character differentiation. She speaks very clearly and uses good pacing. I think she was a great pick for the narration of this book. Overall, if you like stories about WWII or British spies, I think this would be a great introduction to a series containing these elements.
A Short Glimpse at the Phony War
Winter's Pearl is a short prologue to James Philips Guy Winter Mystery series. Its set during the opening days of WWII during the period known as the phony war. Several characters are introduced, points of conflict between them are established and were given an opening mystery to wet our appetites. Based on the prologue, Philips is going to give us a look inside British intelligence and police services during the war. It promises to be most interesting.
I received this as a free Audible download in return for an honest review. The narrator, Melanie Fraser, was excellent.
    Nice listen
What made the experience of listening to Winter's Pearl the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed the style of writing - it's like listening to PD James or Elizabeth George. I was also interested in the Jack the Ripper thread
What was one of the most memorable moments of Winter's Pearl?
    The revelation of the Pearls
    Any additional comments?
I'm glad I listened to this as its the prequel to the Winter's War audiobook that I am listening to.
Promising intro the Guy Winter Series
This prologue is a promising start to the first book in the Guy Winter series called 'Winter's War'. We are introduced to all the main characters and there are quite many. This introduction helped me a lot to get to know the characters with their praise and flaws before the real story started.

    Publisher's Summary:
On a black night in April 1912, fifteen hundred passengers and crew perish as the Titanic slowly sinks beneath the freezing waters of the North Atlantic. Charting the same perilous course through the icebergs is the SS Californian, close enough for her crew to see the eight white distress rockets fired by the Titanic. Yet the Californian fails to act, and later her crew insist that they saw nothing.
As news of the disaster spreads throughout America, journalists begin a feeding frenzy, desperate for stories. John Steadman is one such reporter, a man broken by alcoholism, grief and a failed marriage. Steadman senses blood as he fixates on the Californian and his investigation reveals a tense and perplexing relationship between the ship's captain and second officer, who hold the secrets of what occurred that night. Slowly he peels back the layers of deception, and his final, stunning revelation of what happened while the Titanic sank will either redeem the men of the Californian, or destroy them.
    Members Reviews:
Enjoyable- but too quick to pick a villian
With human tragedy, there is rarely one cause. It is normally a series of errors. So too with the Titanic. A flaw in the watch process and navigation, a flaw in the boar structure, insufficient lifeboats, on board errors in managing the escape of the passengers , and the story brought out in this book. This a well crafted, engaging and well written book. But it pins the blame too quickly on one player in the Titanic disaster
Haunting, beautiful, human story that surprises.
If you have an interest in Titanic you should get this, even if you think you have read and know everything about the disaster. If your interest in the Titanic is passing or found its high water mark when you watched James Cameron's film, you may be thinking do I need this in my library. Well you do!!
This novel is not so much about the Titanic's lone disaster of failing to see ice burgs or having enough life boats for all the passengers, but instead focusses on the disaster of the California, the infamous ship that was close enough to see Titanic's lights, but failed to answer her eight distress rockets seen by the second mate of the California on his titular midnight watch. The ship was a cruise ship belonging to the same company The White Star Line, Captained by a very capable Englishman of the Merchant Navy. The mystery of why the California failed to come to Titanic's aid is what the book aims to answer.
The story is well written, extremely well researched, the author obviously loves everything maritime and absolutely respects deeply the subject matter as well as the characters both fictional and non fictional, and captures the spirit of the times while never falling into tropes.
    Great book
Beautifully captured the intricacies of human nature and its failings in relation to a mammoth disaster
    Thought Provoking
I nearly didn't persevere with this book, but once I got into the story, I just wanted to see why the distress signals were ignored. Kept me interested then until the end, which was very thought provoking. The narrator's voice was a bit annoying, but otherwise a great book.
    Tedious
Had to play this book on double time because it was so slow and dull. Could have all been said in one paragraph. Pride, loyalty, seamen's code of conduct, classism, different perceptions of the same truth...yawn.

    Insights about an intriguing novel
"The Kitchen House," Kathleen Grissom's debut novel is a coming-of-age story about Lavinia, an Irish immigrant who grows up at Tall Oaks, a tobacco plantation in antebellum Virginia. Her story weaves through the challenges of family, abuse, murder, and love.
This Instaread review not only summarizes the story, but contains much more analysis than anything else. Its insights into the characters and their relationships resonated with me, and helped me empathize with them. In fact, knowing that the protagonist's open-heartedness borders on naivete helped me better understand and appreciate the story itself. I also loved the dissection of themes, including Instaread's insights into non-traditional families. This review connects the themes and the story to the author's style, adding a greater appreciation for "The Kitchen House." I was given a copy of this book to review it.

    Errors in production editing
I would have given the overall rating 5 stars as well; however, there were major errors in the audio production. Several times throughout the book music started playing over the narrator. The first time it happened, I thought my phone was ringing some weird new tone. It got frustrating because I had to either ignore the blank in the story (driving!) or stop the story and go to the kindle copy to read it. Then, during the part about going to San Francisco to find gold, an entire paragraph was left out of the narrative. (It didn't make sense, I had to look at the written version.) The missing paragraph was inserted several seconds after it should have been. It was annoying to be engrossed in a story and then to be abruptly ripped out of it because of product errors.
    Forgetting Tabitha
Tabitha becomes an orphan and is forced to live on the streets. She is "rescued" and begins her journey on the orphan train. She is adopted by a loving couple and is raised as Mary. This book tells the story of her growing up and falling in love. Learning to become Mary and Forgetting the days of Tabitha.
I received an audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the book. I know the book is fiction but it is so close to the true history of the Orphan Train. I totally recommend this book to any and all.
