The Wandering Pilgrims

In our last episode, the Stamp Act Congress declared the rights the colonists believed were theirs as British subjects. Now they put the last of those rights into practice: the right to petition. In October 1765, the Congress appealed directly to King George III. There is no talk of independence here, and no rejection of the king. The colonists call their connection with Britain their greatest happiness and security, and they ask the king to protect two essential rights: the right to tax themselves through their own representatives, and the right to trial by their peers, both confirmed, they argue, by the great charter of English liberty.Parliament repealed the Stamp Act in 1766, but passed the Declaratory Act the very same day. The crisis ended. The argument over the limits of government did not.Hear the petition in their own words, as we continue down America's road to independence.Founding of America playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrHxt4CpfgezohDMDP-Em1hnsDel0WbgDA note about the voice: speaking for long stretches is hard on my voice, so these episodes are narrated with an AI voice. Eleven years before the Declaration of Independence, the American colonies were still trying to convince Britain that they were entitled to the rights of British subjects. In October 1765, delegates from nine of the thirteen colonies met in New York for the Stamp Act Congress, and on October 19 they adopted the Declaration of Rights and Grievances. These men were not declaring independence. They professed loyalty to the king, but they drew a line: no taxation without consent, trial by jury, and the right to petition their government. Parliament repealed the Stamp Act in 1766, but passed the Declaratory Act the very same day. The tax disappeared. The argument did not.Hear the document in their own words, as we begin our journey through the original documents of the American founding.Founding of America playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrHxt4CpfgezohDMDP-Em1hnsDel0WbgDA note about the voice: speaking for long stretches is hard on my voice, so these episodes are narrated with an AI voice.
