Why do terrible things happen to people God loves? In this Questions from the Wall episode, we wrestle honestly with suffering, unanswered prayer, Martha’s words at Lazarus’s tomb, and the Cross—without pretending there is an easy answer. Sometimes the answer isn’t an explanation. Sometimes it brings us to Jesus Christ.

In Part One, we asked one of the hardest questions a person can ask:

Is there a God—and how can I be sure?

We didn't pretend we could prove God with an equation. We simply found reasons to keep looking.

Now the question becomes much more personal.

If God exists, can we actually know Him?

In Part Two of this special Questions from the Wall, we follow that question to Jesus Christ. We sit beside Philip when he asks Jesus to show him God. We walk the road to Emmaus with two broken disciples who believe everything they hoped for is gone. We stand beside Thomas when he refuses to believe until he sees for himself. And we confront the claim at the very heart of Christianity:

Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

But eventually, something happens.

We stop asking all the questions.

And Jesus asks one of us:

“But who do you say that I am?” — Matthew 16:15

Episode 3, Part Two: Can We Know Who God Is?

Is there a God?

It's one of the most important questions we can ask—and perhaps one of the hardest questions to ask honestly, especially if we already call ourselves Christians.

What if what we've called providence was coincidence? What if we've mistaken emotion for God's presence? What if we believe simply because we inherited that belief?

And what happens when we stop pointing the question at the atheist and turn it toward ourselves:

Do I actually live as though God is real?

In Part One of this special two-part Questions from the Wall, James refuses to begin with an easy answer. Instead, we step back and ask whether the world around us—and the human experience within it—gives us any real reason to believe there is Someone behind all of this.

We won't prove God with an equation.

We won't pretend the objections aren't there.

We're simply going to ask whether there is enough reason to keep looking.

Because perhaps the next question isn't only whether God exists.

Perhaps it's whether God has ever come looking for us.

Why would a loving God send anyone to hell?

For years, one word in that question has troubled me: sent.

Do I have to be Catholic to go to heaven?

Maybe you’re Catholic. Maybe you’re Protestant. Maybe you don’t belong to any church at all. Beneath the labels is a much deeper question: What did Jesus actually say about salvation—and am I willing to follow Him wherever He leads?

We look at John 3:16 and John 14:6, Peter and the keys, the Church Christ established, and the uncomfortable question that eventually confronted me in my own journey: If I am following Jesus, where is the Church He established today?

Perhaps the deeper question is:

Am I willing to follow Jesus wherever He leads?

Why do we run from God when He is calling us toward something better?

In this episode, we follow the story of the prophet Jonah and discover that the greatest distance we can travel is often not measured in miles, but in the condition of our own hearts. Jonah's story isn't simply about a great fish or a reluctant prophet. It's about God's relentless pursuit of His people and His desire to accomplish His will even through our resistance.

There are few conversations in Scripture as personal as the one Jesus has with the Samaritan woman at the well. Why do we know the truth long before we're willing to admit it?
