Paul now concludes his indictment against all of humanity. From the depraved pagan to the moralist to the religious Jew, the final verdict is in. The whole world is guilty before God.
Mankind is completely helpless and hopeless to his wretched, sinful condition. On one hand this is the worst place a person can be, yet on the other hand it is the only place where a person can truly find hope. It is here that we come to the end of ourselves. It is here that we come to the only place where God can save us, the foot of the cross.
It is a dark road that leads to the foot of the cross, but now Paul will finally be able to show us the salvation that comes through faith in Christ alone and the glory that lies beyond the cross.

Paul having showed the gentile moralizers as well as the flagrantly immoral gentiles, both inescapably guilty before a Holy God, now turns to the Jews. God had given them the law. In their estimation, this not only confirmed their status as God's chosen people but ensured their salvation.
Paul will show that as well as they know the law, they are actually condemned by the law. Even more, he will show that the advantage they have as a Jew will make their condemnation much greater.

Paul has concluded his scathing condemnation of the grotesque, obviously immoral group of sinners. He now begins to build his case against the basically descent, moral, cultured, refined, educated, ethical and in some cases, the religious of society.
This group of moralizers consider the sins of the previously mentioned group to be far worse than their own. However, these moralizers have chosen the wrong standard by which to measure themselves. God will judge men by the standard that He sets. That standard is found in Jesus Christ and His Word.
These moralizers are hypocrites. They are indignant at the grotesque sins of others yet at the same time are indulgent of their own sins. The hypocrite; the self-righteous have an intrinsic blindness to the filth, the cesspool of iniquity contained within their own hearts. Thinking it safely out of the sight of their fellow man, yet it is all fully in the sight of God.

From Romans 1:18 through 3:20, Paul will bring all of humanity into the court room of God showing unquestionably that the whole world is guilty before a Holy God. He will show that God's condemnation rest upon all of humanity because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
In this study we will look at the wrath of God revealed. We will how the universe and all of creation are a revelation of the power, sovereignty and Deity of God. So much so that all of humanity is without excuse. We will go through the painful stages of unbelief and then look at the horrific results that come blatant unbelief.
This passage is difficult to read and to teach for that matter. Yet it is critical that we not avoid it. This passage is a cesspool of iniquity. It is disgusting beyond our imagination yet we must study and understand that this is what we have been saved from. It is only when we realize how great a sinner we are that we can begin to comprehend how great a Savior Jesus is.

Romans, by many, is considered to be the greatest of all Paul's epistles. Some refer to Romans as Paul's magnus opus. Others as the first in every list of Paul's teachings. And one most colorfully, the flagship of the fleet of his epistles.
Paul's other epistles deal with either the church and its challenges or they are pastoral. But in the case of Romans, Paul's focus is on God and His great plan of redemption. It is an incredible statement of God's divine plan for the redemption of mankind.
Romans is broken out in three parts; chapters 1-8 are doctrinal; chapters 9-11 are national and chapters 12-16 are practical.
In our first study we will look at Paul introducing himself through this amazing letter to a church that he has never met.
