Welcome back to The Wayside Podcast!
In the world of the visual arts, an icon is a work depicting an important person or image in the Christian faith. Icons can include everything from various saints and early church fathers and mothers To biblical scenes and images of Christ himself.
For many Christians, these images aren’t just artworks – they are sacred images meant to be used in acts of worship. Our guest today is one such artist who has made the art of creating icons something relevant for believers – and non-believers - living in our complicated world today.
Kelly Latimore began painting icons in 2010 while he was a member of the Common Friars in Ohio. He is now a St. Louis-based artist whose images captivate audiences – everything ranging from modern Saints such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Pauli Murray and Mahalia Jackson TO modern re-imaginings of familiar images such as his Pieta-style image of a Black Mary cradling the body of Jesus who resembles George Floyd and “La Sagrada Familia,” showing the holy family as modern immigrants walking in the desert.
In his own words, Kelly uses his craft to produce a “holy pondering” – we know that after listening to our conversation, you’ll never look at anything the same way again.

Welcome Back to The Wayside Podcast!
Have you ever been awestruck at the beauty of creation? Maybe it was the colors of a sunset or the vastness of the ocean. Have you been inspired by a piece of music, or “drawn in” by a particular work of art? What is that in each of us that longs for something bigger than ourselves?
As we continue the theme of last week’s conversation about a new Christian Renaissance, we wanted to bring in someone who could help us think about beauty and its role in Christian mission and evangelism in our lives. We are delighted to welcome our very own St. Martin’s member, Joy Hilley, back to the Wayside Podcast. Joy is an artist and author, and she was one of our guests in our first series on Hope, and her paintings have actually inspired this whole series that we are currently doing. Enjoy!

"Beauty will save the world..."
This quote from Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky serves as the title and theme of our new series. This week we experience week one of the “Great Fifty” – for us, Easter Sunday is a feast day that merely kicks off fifty great days of rejoicing, celebration and joyful thanksgiving – from the darkness of Good Friday and solemnity of Holy Saturday to the redemption of the world on Easter Sunday. Join us for the next several weeks as we dive into how beauty - in all its forms - can save the world.
In today's episode, we welcome back a returning guest to the podcast: Rev. Dr. Michael Lloyd, or "Dr. Evil" as he is jokingly referred to due to his studies and works on the problem of evil. Dr. Lloyd, the Principal of Wycliffe Hall at Oxford University, begins our journey into this new series.

For the second Sunday of the Easter season, Rev. Lisa R. Neilson - our Vicar for Pastoral Care - spoke of the story of Jesus returning to his disciples after his resurrection in John 20. Much like the disciple Thomas, and the band U2, we often find ourselves saying "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

He is Risen! For Easter Sunday, our Rector Dr. Levenson reminds us that the incredible story of Jesus' resurrection is so much more than a story: it is of infinite importance. Let us all be fools who believe wholeheartedly in the risen Christ.
