We were very thankful to have Bob on the podcast to discuss ways that retailers can start thinking about recovery and the steps to get through this challenging time. 

Bob Negen founded the Mackinaw Kite Co., a small chain of specialty toy and kite stores, in 1981 when he was only 23 years old. He had just graduated from college, didn’t want to get a “real job” and loved flying kites.

It didn’t take long for him to realize that his passion for his product was not enough to make him profitable and he then spent the next twenty years learning how to be a successful merchant. He made more mistakes than you can shake a stick at, but manage to survive and earn the status of “battle tested retail veteran”.

In 1999 he and his wife Susan founded WhizBang! Training to help independent retailers thrive in today’s super-competitive market.

Bob says “no matter what you sell the secret to success is to give your customers the kind of experience that makes your business memorable and parlaying that first experience into a highly profitable long-term relationship”.

Having so much respect and admiration for Ashley, it was a real pleasure to have her join us on the Wealthy Retailer podcast. This was a very timely and thought provoking discussion at a time when our retail community needs new inspiration and guidance. 

The Boutique Hub Founder Ashley Alderson first started The Hub based on her desire to shop boutiques around the world, regardless of her rural location.

Hailing from North Dakota where her nearest shopping opportunity was over 300 miles away, she longed for a place online she could go to find and shop the boutiques she loved together in one place.

What happened next was pretty exciting.

Once launched, Ashley’s formal background in small business development and marketing began to foster a deeper community at the Hub. Ashley noticed that these owners she featured needed a greater voice in fashion, specialized coaching and training, and a central point to connect, collaborate, share tips and find tools to grow their businesses.

Today, Ashley passionately leads The Hub and it’s two sides of its platform, while still coaching and mentoring many boutique owners, and being an advocate for small businesses in fashion.

She is a wife, busy momma of 3, jewelry junkie, barrel racer, cancer survivor, speaker of sarcasm, and heart for those with a dream.

We had a great conversation with Laura Oladokun, owner of Sweet Boutique and learned about her journey into the world of retail.

As a mother of 5 and after 15 years of raising her kids while caring for other children at home, she was encouraged by a friend, some luck and a leap of faith which brought her into the retail world. She felt St. Albert was lacking a boutique for every woman, and Sweet Boutique was created.

Sweet Boutique was established in 2014 as a shop for women to find on-trend, casual clothing as well as accessories and jewellery to complete the look. It has expanded to include all-natural apothecary and children's wear. We strive to find quality pieces that fit every budget and every body, carrying regular and plus sizes. All of our clothing is comfortable, flattering and made of the softest fabrics available. Jewellery is sourced from local designers and the apothecary section is the best we could find in natural hair, body and skin care.

We tiptoed into a different retail category with an energetic conversation with Rob Tryon, the owner of Effing Seafoods (great name!) 

So much fun as we learned about his start, their time at farmer's markets, starting brick and mortar retail operations, subscription services and more. Join us for this one, you won't be disappointed. 

ABOUT: Rob Tryon has been surrounded by the ocean and seafood since birth. In fact, he’s convinced that salt water runs through his veins.

His personal connection to the seafood and fishing industry sets him apart from the rest. His entrepreneurial drive paired with his education in fisheries and aquaculture, and experience in commercial fishing and oyster farming makes his business, Effing Seafoods, a force to be reckoned with.

So, what’s the story behind “Effing” Seafoods? When Rob was shellfish farming, he was looking for a unique way to brand his oysters. They were grown in a small inlet called Effingham Inlet, Barkley Sound, just off the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

Because of this, he dubbed them "Effing Oysters". Just like that, the name immediately began to draw attention from chefs, seafood buyers, foodies and the general public.  He not only saw an impressive increase in sales, but started being approached by many for online interviews and promotional videos.

To this day, after being out of the industry for years, he still gets recognized as the Effing Oyster guy.

He’s carving out that same name in the Edmonton area too!

An unbeatable drive and passion for his trade has catapulted him into the public spotlight as a seafood and fish purveyor that the city has never seen before.

Ryan Belder is an extremely passionate snowboarder, surfer, outdoorsman and entrepreneur who lives in Banff, Canada. He's been a part of Unlimited Skate and Snow in Banff since 2006 and Launched MAI Underwear (a fast growing women's intimates/swim company) in early 2017. 

Ryan can usually be found doing something active outdoors with his wife Jenni whether at home in Banff or abroad somewhere tropical with waves and good food. Most of his endeavors are somehow tied back to the desire to follow his passions, surround himself with good people and share some great adventures. On those cold Canadian evenings he'll be hunkered down with his wife and pets watching sports, or planning the next adventure with a glass of nice whisky in his hand.
