We got permission to film at a stranger's wedding. Twenty minutes later Charl ran across the venue mid-song to grab the mic back, and then we walked up the wrong hill for ages and had to come back through the entire wedding again, dripping in sweat, past every supplier we'd just introduced ourselves to AND SAID GOODBYE TO!!
Part three — the final one — of our Cyprus business trip. Buggies, waterfalls, turtles, a wedding we felt like we'd gatecrashed, and the saxophone player big holiday companies keep selling to couples who will never actually get him.
In this one:
🤍 – Coral Residence — the beachfront venue we ended up at, where you can be on the sand without being on the sand, and the sunset lands right behind it. It's on the dashboard now
– The wrong hill. We left the wedding, took what we thought was a shortcut back to the car, got to the top and found a dual carriageway — then had to walk all the way back down, through the venue, and say hello and goodbye to every single supplier for a second time
🤍 – Victor, the Brazilian sax player — and the thing that keeps happening to him. Big holiday companies use his photos and videos to sell him to couples, then a couple of weeks before the wedding say he's "not available" and send a different sax player. He's never worked with them in his life. If you booked a named supplier, get it in writing — or cut the middleman out entirely and message him direct, because he's on our dashboard
– Adonis Waterfalls — go by buggy or jeep, never a rental car. Off-roading voids your hire agreement, and we've watched a rental Beetle sit stranded on a boulder while a 4x4 drove past
– The bit nobody mentions about the falls — the steps down are steep, uneven and full of tree roots. It is not accessible, and it's worth knowing that before you build a day round it for your guests
– Lara Bay and the turtle nests — protected, marked out, and the flipper tracks running straight down the sand to the water
– The snorkelling trip where Kate finally saw her turtle — and why the operator you pick matters. No chasing, no feeding, no twelve people in the water at once
– Jumbo at Kings Avenue Mall — IKEA on steroids, three floors, and where Kate got her wedding sparklers, the flower girl gifts, the cool bags she still uses and a DIY bouquet for the price of a round of drinks
– A full beach club day on Paphos Harbour for €18 — two sunbeds, proper hotel mattresses, towels and a locker
– Getting around — taxis are extortionate (€18 there, €25 back, for a ten-minute drive). Buses are around €2.50. Parking is free basically everywhere on the island. Hire the car.
And that's the trip. We fly back out to Cyprus on Tuesday 1st September — new venues, new suppliers, and this time we're filming Victor play properly. Coming to a very near episode.
