This week on The Weekly Recharge, we’re talking about Illinois’ new rules for high-powered e-motos, Rad Power Bikes’ owner launching a crowdfunding campaign, Trek’s new Europe-only Allant+ FS, and whether e-bike tracking features can actually help recover a stolen bike.
Illinois is drawing a clearer line between legal Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes and faster, more powerful e-moto-style devices. The new law does not affect legal e-bikes that fit within the three-class system, but devices outside those limits may now need registration and motorcycle-level compliance.
We also cover Rad Life Mobility’s crowdfunding campaign and what it could mean for Rad Power Bikes, QuietKat, and Serial 1 after Life EV acquired Rad earlier this year.
Plus, Trek has revealed the 2027 Allant+ FS for the European market, with Bosch mid-drive power, full suspension, 800Wh batteries, MIK racks, four-piston brakes, and two build options.
Later in the episode, we answer viewer questions about stolen e-bike recovery and location tracking, compare the Lectric XP4 750 and Jasion Hunter Pro for city riding, look at eMTB options under $3,000, and break down the Velotric Nomad 2 vs Monarch Tracer for RV travel, comfort, and value.
We also feature Rider of the Week, e-bike trivia, Drift Sports’ Mina SPD-compatible shoe, updates on recent Electric Bike Report reviews, the Nantucket bike path network, and this week’s best e-bike deals.
Let us know in the comments: do you think Illinois handled the e-bike vs e-moto issue the right way?
