About The Weird Circle

From the publisher's feed

"The Weird Circle" was a classic American old-time radio drama series that aired from 1943 to 1945. It was a syndicated, 30-minute program primarily known for its adaptations of classic horror,…

supernatural, and suspense stories from famous authors. Here's a breakdown of what made "The Weird Circle" distinctive:

Literary Adaptations: Unlike some other horror anthology shows that relied on original scripts, "The Weird Circle" largely drew from well-known public domain works of the 19th century and earlier. Authors whose works were adapted included:
Edgar Allan Poe: (e.g., "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Cask of Amontillado")
Robert Louis Stevenson: (e.g., "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde")
Charles Dickens: (e.g., "The Queer Client," "Dr. Manette's Manuscript" from A Tale of Two Cities, "The Signal-Man" as "The Thing in the Tunnel")
Victor Hugo: (e.g., "Last Days of a Condemned Man")
Nathaniel Hawthorne: (e.g., "Rappaccini's Daughter," "The Burial of Roger Malvin")
Wilkie Collins: (e.g., "A Terribly Strange Bed," "The Dream Woman")
Guy de Maupassant: (e.g., "The Horla," "The Hand")
Mary Shelley: (e.g., "Frankenstein")
And many others, including Honoré de Balzac, Emily Brontë, Charlotte Brontë, Ambrose Bierce, and Washington Irving.
Atmosphere over Music: A curious and notable aspect of "The Weird Circle" was its lack of musical background throughout the episodes, save for transitions between scenes. Some believe this absence of continuous music actually helps the show feel less dated and more immersive, relying purely on sound effects, dialogue, and narration to build suspense and mood.
"Weird" and Macabre Themes: The stories often explored themes of the unknown, apparitions, monsters, psychological dread, tragic fates, and misdeeds coming back to haunt individuals. They were designed to send shivers down the listener's spine and often concluded with a macabre or unsettling twist.
Production: The series was produced by the NBC Radio Recording Division (NBCRRD) and was syndicated to stations across the US and Canada. A total of 78 episodes were produced over its two-year run.
Opening: The show typically began with a distinctive opening that set the eerie tone, often with the sound of the surf and a chant-like invitation to "join the circle" of the weird, the supernatural, and the unearthly.
