My granddaddy used to say there were two kinds of wells in these hills — the ones that gave water and the ones that gave something else. I never thought much of that saying until I met a girl named Ellie at the crossroads near Larkin's Hollow. She was wearing a dress from another decade and asked me for a ride to a well that had been dry for fifty years. I didn't take her, but I saw her again that night, walking up the old logging road with a lantern that cast no light. The next morning, I drove out to the well myself. The water was clear as glass, and when I looked in, I saw my own face — but the eyes weren't mine. They were green. Ellie's eyes. This episode takes place in late October of 2009, on a dirt road off Route 17 in eastern Kentucky. It's about thirst, and echoes, and what happens when you look too long into something that looks back.
