Jesus said that the world will recognize his disciples by how they love another. But truthfully, the church hasn’t always lived up to this calling. While the early church survived against all odds, today’s church has every advantage and yet is rapidly diminishing. How can we become an irresistible church once again?

Joseph’s story shows us that nothing is wasted in the kingdom of God. Even the darkest moment that was intended for harm can be redeemed for good if we allow God to write the ending of our story.

When it comes to ambition too often we go to extremes: either we shy away from it or we pursue it uncritically. As Joseph ascends to the heights of power, he embodies this servant leadership we as followers of Jesus are called to, and shows us how to lead with humility.

In the dark moments of life it is easy to give over to despair and the belief that God has abandoned us. Joseph’s story acknowledges the anguish of experiencing God’s absence, and reminds us that God is always with us, growing our faith and resilience.

With Joseph we see that doing the right thing doesn’t always earn us what we deserve. But our character is the only thing we take with us in the end. Choosing integrity may not always be easy, but in the end it is always worth it.

A colorful tale about far more than a colorful coat, Joseph’s story continues the dysfunctional family drama of Israel, beginning with jealousy, violence and betrayal. Pride, selfishness, and self-deception seem to rule the day. But the good news is that God is not above using the poor choices of broken people to bring about his redemptive promise.
