Why do you do what you do? How many of you know we can do all the right things for all the wrong reasons? We can put in the necessary work on the job, but only to impress the boss, climb the corporate ladder or simply get a paycheck. We can take out the garbage, so our spouse won’t be mad at us. We can parent our kids, but discipline them to get them off our backs, or push them hard so we can live vicariously through them. We can even go to church regularly, but more out of a motivation to look good and check a religious box than to actually encounter God and love others. The reality? …no one is impressed. The average person can see right through us, as our true motives will find us out. And honestly, bad motives rarely lead to good, healthy places. As we continue our series, “This Is What We Do,” the apostle James is going to expose how the results of our lives often reveal our true motives. If we can dig at them deep enough, and rebuild the foundation of our motives, we can experience significant freedom.
