The rich young ruler comes to Jesus trying to understand how to obtain eternal life. He did not expect that following Jesus would be an invitation to give up everything he thought would make him important enough to obtain eternal life. After conquering the land, the eastern tribes return home and build an altar. The rest of Israel assumes the worst and rallies in war against their brothers and sisters to guard against idolatry. Yet in the Book of Judges, these people who immediately rallied against kin don't even know the Lord just two generations later. From Joshua, we see that our past does not define us, and we must walk faithfully with God after our failures. From the Gibeonites, we see God's character toward reconciled enemies.
