It's when parents slowly begin living through their children. The scary part? Most don't even realize it's happening. It starts with love. It starts with support. It starts with wanting the best for your child. But somewhere along the way, the child's hockey journey becomes the parent's emotional journey. The child's success becomes the parent's success. The child's failure becomes the parent's failure. And before long, the game stops belonging to the player. Today we're talking about one of the hardest truths in youth hockey.

I want you to think back for a moment. Think about why most kids start playing hockey. It's usually pretty simple. They love being on the ice. They love scoring goals. Making saves. Being with friends. Playing mini-sticks in the basement. Road hockey in the driveway. Pond hockey in the winter. The game itself is what draws them in. Somewhere along the way, though, something changed. Today, youth hockey is often filled with adult expectations, adult egos, adult conflicts, and adult agendas. And the saddest part? Many kids are simply trying to survive in a world they never created.

Today's episode might make some people uncomfortable. And honestly, that's okay.

Because if we're going to have honest conversations about youth hockey, we have to be willing to talk about the things people whisper about in parking lots but rarely say out loud. And before anyone gets defensive, this isn't about one team, one coach, or one organization. This is about patterns.

You know, the longer I coach, the more I realize that some of the biggest lessons kids need to learn are the very lessons parents are trying hardest to prevent. Think about that for a moment. But somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that protecting our children from failure was helping them. I'm not so sure it is.

This one has the potential to hit parents hard because it moves beyond hockey and forces them to examine their role in their child's entire development, not just their hockey journey.

“You think people don’t notice… but every rink knows exactly who you are.” Long-term damage parents create. Parent causes issues on multiple teams over years. By U16/U18… doors quietly close. Not because of the kid’s talent— But because of the parent. Your reputation travels faster than your kid’s stats.

I see it every year. A player is 12 years old. Maybe 13. Maybe 14. And already people are talking about junior hockey. They're talking about college scholarships. They're talking about the NHL. They're talking about agents, exposure, rankings, showcases, and development paths. Meanwhile, the kid still struggles making a clean breakout pass. Still struggles receiving a pass under pressure. Still struggles competing every shift. And that's the problem. Too many parents are managing careers that haven't even started yet.

One of the hardest lessons in hockey is that the game eventually tells the truth. Not today.

Not next month. Maybe not even next season.

But eventually it does. You can manipulate tryouts. You can influence decisions. You can have connections. You can know the right people. You can get opportunities others don't get. But eventually none of that matters. Because hockey has a way of exposing reality. The game eventually tells the truth about coaches. The game eventually tells the truth about parents. And the game eventually tells the truth about players.

Every hockey parent wants the same thing.

They want to make sure they're doing the right thing. The right team. The right coach. The right spring program. The right camp. The right development plan. And every year I watch parents panic because they think they're falling behind. And suddenly they start asking themselves:

"Are we on the right path?"

Today I'm going to tell you something that some people in hockey don't want you to hear.

There is no single path. Not one.

I've watched players dominate at 10. Dominate at 12. Dominate at 13. And then completely disappear by 16. I've also watched average players quietly develop year after year and eventually pass everyone who was ahead of them. Why? Because hockey development is rarely linear. Kids grow differently. Mature differently. Develop confidence differently. And eventually, the scoreboard starts keeping track of things that really matter. Hockey IQ. Decision making. Work ethic. Resilience. Character. Coachability.
