we apologize for the delay. In this episode, we wrap up our discussion of The Gilded Cage - alias esteemed society - by discussing marriage 💒.

From the actual historical backdrop (or what we know of it thanks to Jane Austen!), to the conventions of the dime-store romance novel, to the best and worst marriages in the Ton, a swift this or that... we get into it all 👰‍♀️. We even talk a bit about our own views of marriage!

Another Wednesday another episode- unfortunately due to regular lives interjecting into our recording schedules, we could not release an entire mega episode. A lady's and debutantes' lives are never easy! But that didn't deter us from another hiatus and so we dug through our archives and came across a deep-dive into one of the most complex (and a personal favourite) characters in our bonne ton- Miss Marina Thompson.

we have decided to put our series of the thread of the Gilded (C)age on a hold for a while, and take a look on the fashionable side of London and - now the award winning - menagerie of costumes of our bon ton 🧵.

Join us as we debate the best fits of the seasons of 1813, 1814 and 1815 and very briefly few even those yet to be seen in their proper glory in the upcoming Masquerade Ball - an event which requires even the humble (Smythe) quartet of us to choose befitting frocks 👗.

Dearest Gentle Mayfairers,

we have not yet thrown our quils into the fire, nor allowed a certain spinster to take credit for our foul work. Our deepest apologies.

It has been said that family squabbling is the greatest evil of all. Perhaps, though, it is better to hurt with words, rather than to hold one's tongue and allow the feelings poison one's spirit... or worse, resurface in the most unfortunate time and poison the spirit of everyone else.

Join us to squabble... discuss... two female-led families, trying to navigate the patriarchal gilded cage of ton. We shall begin with those whom we are yet to meet properly: Araminta Gun, the Countess of Penwood, and her daughters Rosamund and Posy who hope to sparkle brightly on the marriage mart of 1816... while a certain jewel already shines within the walls of Penwood House. 🪭

In the second half of the podcast, we shall pay a visit to the Kate Bridgerton, the Viscountess Bridgerton, and her adoptive family Lady Mary and Edwina. While there is certainly more of love between these three women, buried thoughts and feelings will come to crawl in the most unfortunate times. 🦚

Hopefully by the end of this week, we shall continue with Bassets, Mondriches... and also, of course, the family 'of the tasteless, tactless mama'. Then, in order to escape the gilded cage, we would have to tackle the question of intimacy and marriage unions, before humouring you with some remarks on the gowns of the previous social seasons. 👀

Forgive the grave delay in posting this episode but these authors find it better late than never when writing or rather recording substantial content and this episode is no exception.

We continue our journey dissecting our gilded cage in Bridgerton, talking about the societal pressures that various characters face from the rules and stances of 1800s society and the consequences when those rules are bent or broken.
