Publisher's Summary:
Stuck in a job he doesn't want - but can't afford to lose - as nominal Head of the Communications Department at Fenland University, Wilt is still subject to the whims of The Powers That Be, both in and outside of work. The demands of his snobbish wife Eva, and the stupendous school fees of his despicable quadruplet daughters cause him the biggest headaches...apart from the hangovers, that is. When Eva signs him up for a summer job, teaching the gun-toting idiot son of a lusty local aristocrat, Wilt is not amused. But, as circumstances unravel and the summer goes on, Wilt sees that the situation could be put to his financial advantage, as well as giving Eva some headaches of her own.
Members Reviews:
good slapstick; a little misogynist?
I loved reading Sharpe in past years - and perhaps I was expecting too much. I laughed, but not heartily. He satirizes both men and women, but the women seem to get the uglier side of his wit in this offering.
Still, British campus comedies - and related novels like this Wilt outing- - are better entertainment than most light fiction. Anyone working in education will laugh at Sharpe's continued commentary on the farcical elements of that system, no matter on which side of the Atlantic. I'm going to download an earlier Sharpe to see if it is him or me that changed.
Michael Tudor-Barnes delivers excellent narration, as usual.
True Wilt
If you like Tom Sharpes' wit and prose style then this is immensely enjoyable with Wilt on the receiving end of his domineering wife's treatment and at the mercy of the quad's escapades. Great series and worth listening too!
Dire
The story initially showed promise - in the first few pages that is. After that, I can honestly say that the book was not remotely amusing. Very disappointing.
