Have you ever wondered why God gave us certain commandments? What if they're not just rules to follow, but invitations to become more like Him?
While exploring Exodus 20 and the Ten Commandments, I noticed something profound about the Sabbath commandment. God doesn't just tell us to rest—He explains that we should rest because He rested. This simple pattern reveals a powerful truth: we are made in God's image and designed to imitate Him. When we follow His commands, we're not just obeying rules; we're being transformed into His likeness.
Jesus himself said, "If you've seen me, you've seen the Father"—a game-changing perspective on God's character. Scripture describes Christ as "the express image" of God, and we are called to be "conformed to the image of Christ." This creates a spiritual connectivity where God's love, power, goodness, judgment, mercy, and beauty flow through us as we align with His nature.
Too often, we approach our faith with a checklist mentality: "I've done this, avoided that—I must be good." But God's intent goes deeper. Even the physical structures in Scripture—the tabernacle and temple—were designed as earthly representations of heavenly realities. Like those sacred spaces, we are living temples where God's Spirit dwells, meant to reflect His kingdom.
Perhaps most intriguing is this concept: if God is a Creator who made us in His image, then we are designed to be creators too—"mini creators" participating in His ongoing work. When reading Scripture, especially challenging Old Testament passages, don't get lost in the details. Instead, ask: "Lord, what's Your intent? How are You trying to change me through this?" The answer often reveals God's transformative purpose.
Challenge yourself to look beyond religious routine and discover how God is shaping you into His image. Get in the Word for yourself—and watch how it changes everything.
