"Machos' ears nipped straight up, and he suddenly ceased all movement. His entire body became rigid, and he stood in front of me, fur erect. He lowered his head and tucked his tail between his legs. He stared intently across the open expanse of the park into the swirling blackness of night. The breeze blew directly into our faces as Macho froze in place. We were downwind of something he didn’t like."
