We often think of surrendering our rationale to God as a chore but it is essentially an act of love. This sacrifice of love is the fuel for a life of faith. Zacchaeus lived the corrupt life of a tax collector but he had no regard for society’s validation or approval. This quality validated his crooked way of life but it also emboldened him to bear the humiliation of looking foolish while climbing a Sycamore tree in order to satisfy his desire to see Jesus. At the core of this quality is the virtue of humility. Fr. Joseph explains how Zacchaeus exercised this humility by recognizing his brokenness and staying true to himself. And from this awareness he ignored what others thought about him and sought to see Jesus.
