In this sermon Rev. Lee looks at how Christ's saving work on the cross is understood to be the work of the "Second Adam," who brings righteousness and life to those who receive his grace by faith. This text is crucial in our understanding of original sin as the imputation of Adam's guilt to the entire race: "one trespass led to condemnation for all men." It is also crucial for understanding justification by faith alone as an act where the righteousness and obedience of Christ is imputed to the sinner: "one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men."

We continue our journey through the Heidelberg Catechism's teaching on the Ten Commandments, in the section of the catechism on how we show our gratitude to God for his saving work in Christ. In this episode we see that the Law is not to show us how righteous we are, but how sinful. In particular, Christ teaches us that we all commit the sin of murder in our hearts.

In chapter 2 Paul argues from our natural impulse to judge to God's ultimate judgment of all men according to the "secrets of their heart." The Gospel calls all people to repentance, and charges us as guilty for crimes worthy of death.
