Abigail is joined by Eryn Murray in the series, "The Words We Use." In this series we are exploring a few commonly used psychological terms, their root, and meaning, and how to identify them better with a greater understanding. In this conversation, Abigail and Eryn discuss the true meaning of gaslighting and how they are all too familiar with its presence.
Episode Notes:
"gaslighting is a form of psychological and emotional abuse; a series of manipulation techniques where an abuser makes a victim question their reality. Over time, the victim feels as if they is losing their mind and that he cannot trust their own perception of the world. The victim then relies more on the gaslighter to determine the "correct" version of reality. The gaslighter's ultimate goal is to gain control and power over a person in a bid to get all their attention."
— definition from "Healing from Toxic Relationship" by Stephanie Mouton Sarkis
The term “gaslighting” comes from the name of a 1938 play and 1944 film, Gaslight, in which a husband manipulates his wife into thinking she has a mental illness. (Medical News Today)
