A collection of classic works by Edgar Allan Poe, American author, poet, editor, and literary critic. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.
This volume includes "Philosophy of Furniture", "The Sphinx", "Hop-Frog", "The Man of the Crowd", "Never Bet the Devil Your Head", "Thou Art the Man", "Why the Little Frenchman Wears his Hand in a Sling", and "Some Words with a Mummy".
Editorial Reviews:
Edgar Allen Poes poems and stories of horror and mystery blend wit with the macabre. His inventive narratives and erudite use of language have delighted countless fans since his career was tragically short in the early 19th century. Here is a selection of works from one of the most admired and entertaining American intellects.
Volume 5 is performed by Scott Woodside, whose rich, throaty voice rolls over Poes lyrical, stylized language and who makes a noble effort at the hilarious Why the Little Frenchman Wears His Hand in a Sling, written phonetically in a thick Irish brogue. Among the other selections in this volume are stories approaching detective fiction, an essay on interior decorating, and satires digging at transcendentalists, popular sciences and people of Poes time.

It's Poe!
Who doesn't love Edgar Allan Poe! I don't like to write too much in book reviews because I feel that in order to adequately write a review, I would have to give away information that would be key to plot. I don't like to be the person to give away spoilers. Therefore my book reviews are always very short and only say a few things in order to tell you, book reviews are much to subjective and I never read a book review before I read a book. I read a book based on what the book is about which I don't read a review to get. If you want more information, buy the book and read it. :)
Enjoyed many of the stories and essays, but it left out the poems that were cited
Some great short stories and interesting essays mixed in with some pieces that were difficult to understand. My main beef was that the essays about poetry left out practically all the passages from the poems that Poe was discussing. However, there's a separate volume I finished after reading this one that has all of Poe's poems, plus his critical essays about poetry. That volume included the same essays as this one, but with the poetic passages he cites intact. However, there were some problems with that volume too, where the bottoms of some of the pages were cut off.
