Ep #182 with Emily Lanxner, steel pan player and composer. Emily lives in Hardwick, VT and is an exceptional steel pan player. She performs a Bach Prelude in this episode along with a song by Cesária Évora. As an environmental activist she uses her music to bring attention to honey bees and the current concern with colony collapse disorder. For the live music we are also joined by Haitian drummer Maestro Renald and play a rousing Rara piece with the Koné horns.

Ep #181 with Miguel Espinoza Flamenco Fusion. From the Southwest of the US, Miquel grew up playing guitar from a very early age, accompanying flamenco dance classes and touring with flamenco dance groups. The group includes a cellist, Dianne who is also featured in this interview, a bass player, percussionist and sax player.

Ep #180 with Mei Han, zheng player and composer. Mei Han grew up in China during the cultural revolution and her exposure to music was limited to propaganda songs praising Mao and the Communist Party. She started learning the ancient zheng which was considered to be a dying instrument. She directs a Chinese World Fusion Quartet called Red Chamber and has worked with musicians from all over the world. She even does Chinese bluegrass!

Ep #176 with Jamshied Sharifi, composer, orchestrator and keyboardist. Jamshied Sharifi is in great demand as an orchestrator and won an award on Broadway for "The Band's Visit." He is a very expressive keyboardist and uses a breath controller when he plays. He writes original compositions for orchestra and produces music for many other artists.

Ep #173 - with Sweet Plantain, World Fusion String Quartet

Sweet Plantain is a dynamic latin-influenced string quartet from NYC but they are quite unusual in that their violinists double on trombone and mandolin. They also bring a wide range of World Music into their performances and original compositions. In this episode we get to hear their arrangement of the classic Brazilian samba “Chega De Saudade” and also some original compositions that feature rap, Swedish fusion and the Cole Porter song "Love For Sale." They have traveled around the world but mostly perform in NYC where they enjoy bringing their music to their communities. Eddie Venegas is my guest who is the violinist/trombonist for the group.
