Bahman Sarram is an artist, violinist, composer, producer and singer/songwriter whose music ties together many cultures and expressions into an ecstatic celebration of life. Based in San Diego, Bahman has won over audiences with his passion and unlimited energy that vibrates through his performances and diverse musical palette.
Bahman’s musical versatility knows no bounds and can’t be categorized into a single genre. No matter what style he’s playing whether funk, jazz fusion, Middle Eastern, Conscious Music, folk or rock, his improvisational skills, raw energy and natural instinct for melody leaves audiences with a feeling that they have experienced something unique and rare.
In this episode, we discuss Bahman's early music days as a child in post-revolutionary Iran, where music lessons were officially banned by the regime. It leads us to a deep and important conversation about the universal experiences of artists who have left their homeland for creative freedom.
Today, Bahman and his group The Mystic Groove Collective includes a lineup of musicians that have been together for over 15 years playing for diverse audience with a passion that leaves listeners entranced at every show.

Odeya Nini is a Los Angeles based experimental vocalist and contemporary composer. At the locus of her interest is performance practices, textural harmony, gesture, tonal animation, and the illumination of minute sounds, in works spanning chamber music to vocal pieces and collages of musique concrète. Her solo vocal work extends the dimension and expression of the voice and body, creating a sonic and physical panorama of silence to noise and tenderness to grandeur. Odeya has collaborated extensively with dancers, visual artists, filmmakers and theater directors as both a composer and soloist and has worked with and appeared in works by artists and ensembles such as Meredith Monk, Butch Morris, Lucy & Jorge Orta, wild Up and The Industry.
Odeya's work has been presented at venues and festivals across the US and internationally, such as The Hammer Museum, REDCAT, Joyce Soho, MONA and Art Basel Miami, from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv, Australia, Mongolia, Madagascar and Vietnam. She has lectured on contemporary vocal techniques and composition at the university level and leads workshops exploring the creative and healing qualities of voice and movement.

Sam Setchko better known as Simsamiza or Smiz if you happen to be in to brevity. Born in Oakland, California little Smiz was a rugged renegade who’d gone rogue and found his heart skating the streets of the Bay Area whilst discovering the intrinsic rhythms of all things. Eventually ascertaining that frequency and rhythm were different expressions or density’s of the same fundamental value he’s spent a lifetime artistically collaborating and performing in a myriad of mediums that sometimes are traditional but often involve chaotic spirals in to uncharted and unique eclectic expressions most humans find repulsive for about 10-20 years. He’s the most widely unknown philosopher of his time. This interview was orignally recored on January 10, 2022.

American composer Derrick Skye is known for integrating music practices from different cultural traditions around the world into his work with classical music communities. The Los Angeles Times describes Derrick’s music as “something to savor” and “enormous fun to listen to.” During his studies at the USC and the California Institute of the Arts, music across many cultures became an integral part of his musical vocabulary. Skye’s music has been commissioned and/or performed by ensembles including Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Albany Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Los Angeles Master Chorale among many. He serves as Artistic Director of the new music collective and arts organization Bridge to Everywhere. I really enjoyed hearing Derrick’s insights and perspectives on how and why he feels called to incorporate the music of many parts of the world into his composition.

Aminah Chishti Qawwal is a leading force in the art of traditional qawwali tabla. As a student of the great Ustad Dildar Hussain Khan (tabla player for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for 28 years), Aminah has embodied this music through years of study and commitment. She has challenged the cultural confines of women in Pakistan and India not only by performing tabla in an all-male arena, but also by receiving permission to perform at the shrines of Pakistan's greatest Sufi saints, where women haven't traditionally been allowed to play. Aminah represents a new bridge between East and West in a cultural exchange rooted in ancient tradition. This interview illuminates Aminah’s journey into this rich heritage.
