Long before humanity learned to write, stories were told about spirits and demons and things that go bump in the night. Similar stories are told today involving religious beliefs, extrasensory perception, auras, miracles, and ghosts, just to name a few. I’m a scientist, and therefore it should surprise no one that I am skeptical of all such beliefs. In conversations with people who embrace them, I will point to inconsistencies in their ideas, or to reasons why I don’t accept their conclusions. Often these conversations will conclude with the other person saying, “Of course you don’t believe in this. You’re a scientist. You don’t know anything about this. It’s supernatural.”

In 2006, a team of neurologists led by Shahar Arzy and Olaf Blanke reported on an unusual case of felt presence. A 22-year-old woman was having a pre-surgical evaluation for epilepsy treatment, and she had given consent to have her brain stimulated with electrical current. Among the sites stimulated was the left temporoparietal junction (TPJ), an area of the brain behind and above the ear where the back of the temporal lobe meets the lower side of the parietal lobe.

When the experimenters probed this area, a striking thing happened: a strong feeling of a shadow presence befell the woman, occurring directly behind where she was sitting. When they tried it again, she described “a ‘person’ as young and of indeterminate sex, a ‘shadow’ who did not speak or move, and whose position beneath her back was identical to her own.” They then tried stimulation while she was standing, then in a different sitting position: each time the presence mimicked her, and at one point — unpleasantly — she felt it embrace her. This shadow figure was not her, but its movements were inextricably tied to her own. What had produced this phantom?

Two per cent of all fishing gear used worldwide ends up polluting the oceans, our new research finds. To put that into perspective, the amount of longline fishing gear littering the ocean each year can circle the Earth more than 18 times.We interviewed 450 fishers from seven of the world’s biggest fishing countries including Peru, Indonesia, Morocco and the United States, to find out just how much gear enters the global ocean. We found at current loss rates, in 65 years there would be enough fishing nets littering the sea to cover the entire planet.
This lost fishing equipment, known as ghost gear, can cause heavy social, economic and environmental damage. Hundreds of thousands of animals are estimated to die each year from unintentional capture in fishing nets. Derelict nets can continue to fish indiscriminately for decades.
