Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Alan Cassels, Canadian drug-policy researcher, author, journalist and public-health commentator whose work examines the relationship between the pharmaceutical industry, medical research, prescription medications, government regulation and the marketing of modern medicine.Based in Victoria, British Columbia, Cassels has spent decades investigating how prescription drugs are researched, approved, promoted and prescribed. His work has explored the influence of pharmaceutical marketing on physicians, the challenges of interpreting clinical research and the importance of providing patients with reliable, independent information about the benefits and risks of medications.Cassels is the co-author, with Ray Moynihan, of Selling Sickness: How the World's Biggest Pharmaceutical Companies Are Turning Us All Into Patients, a widely discussed book examining the phenomenon known as disease mongering. The authors investigate how ordinary experiences, risk factors and relatively mild conditions can sometimes be presented as medical problems requiring pharmaceutical treatment. Their research raises questions about the boundaries between legitimate medical care, disease awareness campaigns and commercial marketing.Through his writing and research, Cassels has also examined direct-to-consumer drug advertising, conflicts of interest in medical research, pharmaceutical industry funding, drug safety, unnecessary prescribing and the rising costs of healthcare. His work encourages patients and healthcare professionals to consider whether the evidence supporting a medication demonstrates meaningful improvements in health, rather than relying exclusively on promotional claims or changes in laboratory measurements. The pharmaceutical industry has produced medications that have saved and improved countless lives. Nevertheless, the financial relationships between manufacturers, researchers, regulators and healthcare providers raise important questions about transparency, accountability and public trust. Cassels argues that independent research, informed consent and balanced information are essential to ensuring that treatment decisions serve patients' interests.
