Just two weeks ago, the Yankees were floundering against anyone and everyone, hanging onto the final Wild Card spot for dear life, and they had to do major damage against a whole bunch of middling-to-bad teams to stay alive. They did all that and more, cut 4.5 games off the Blue Jays’ AL East lead for a hot second, put 6 games of distance between themselves and the teams below the playoff fold, and now the REAL work begins. They’re two games in the loss column below the No. 1 seed in the American League. With the caveat that it’s hard to believe in them really going out and grabbing it, and they gave themselves the gap they needed to weather this oncoming storm by beating bad teams, it is kind of amazing that they’re here with 25 games left.
