1892. The narrative, presented as the private journal of an unnamed female protagonist suffering from what her physician husband diagnoses as temporary nervous depression following childbirth, details her enforced isolation and inactivity as part of the "rest cure"—a regimen of bed rest, limited intellectual stimulation, and prohibition from work or creative expression—in a rented colonial mansion's attic nursery adorned with repulsive yellow wallpaper. Over time, the protagonist's suppressed frustration manifests as an obsessive fixation on the wallpaper's chaotic patterns, which she interprets as concealing a trapped woman struggling to escape, culminating in her psychological unraveling as she identifies with and attempts to free the figure by destroying the wallpaper and adopting its creeping behavior.
Gilman drew the story from her own 1887 experience with severe postpartum depression treated via the rest cure prescribed by neurologist S. Weir Mitchell, which she found exacerbated her condition by denying her agency and productive outlets, leading to near-permanent invalidism until she rejected it through travel, writing, and physical activity. In her 1913 essay "Why I Wrote The Yellow Wallpaper," Gilman explicitly stated the work's purpose: to dramatize the treatment's harms and advocate against its application, particularly to women whose societal roles already limited autonomy, noting its impact in prompting Mitchell to alter his methods after receiving an advance copy. The story critiques not only medical paternalism but also the causal role of enforced passivity in mental decline, predating modern understandings of iatrogenic effects in psychiatric care where patient disempowerment hinders recovery. Though later canonized in feminist literary studies for allegorizing patriarchal confinement, its core evidentiary value lies in documenting a real therapeutic failure that contributed to the rest cure's eventual disrepute among physicians by the early 20th century.
