The young silverback

Listen Later

Gorillas are vegetarians and eat mostly leaves and shoots of plants. Like other monkeys and Great apes, they sometimes also eat fruit. To find their favorite leaves they often travel many miles. Gorillas travel on average 1105 m (. 687 mi) per day. (https://primate.wisc.edu/primate-info-net/pin-factsheets/pin-factsheet-gorilla/). Habituated or new gorilla groups that are used to tourism may not travel as much.

They also travel by season, so they know when certain trees or plants will be blooming or have fruit. When the time is right they will be there and ready to eat. They will even venture into tourist areas, where they can be discouraged to go back to the forest area for their safety. This means they are willing to risk it all to get the food and nutrients they need.
