From the Robert Bierenbaum to the O.J. Simpson Case, the disturbing thing about spousal murder is not just the violence itself. It is the intimacy of it all. These are not strangers meeting in dark alleys. These are people who shared passwords, bedsheets, inside jokes, rent, children, groceries, anniversaries, and arguments about whose turn it was to wash plates.
In many cases, warning signs existed long before the crimes—controlling behaviour, intimidation, obsession, secrecy, or escalating conflict.
Recognizing those signs isn’t easy, especially when relationships appear happy from the outside.
But these stories remind us that appearances can be deceiving.
The smiling photographs.
