As Israel continues their journey, they face opposition from surrounding nations. Fiery serpents come among the people, and a bronze serpent is lifted up for healing. Victories are won over several kings as Israel moves forward. Balak, king of Moab, sends for Balaam to curse Israel.

Duties and provisions for the priests and Levites are outlined. Laws for purification are given, including the use of the water of cleansing. Miriam dies, and the people again complain about water in the wilderness. Moses strikes a rock to bring forth water but is later told he will not enter the promised land, and Aaron dies on Mount Hor.

Silver trumpets are made to guide the movement of the camp. At last, the cloud lifts from the tabernacle, and Israel sets out from Sinai on their journey.

The leaders of Israel bring offerings for the dedication of the altar. Each tribe presents identical gifts over twelve days. The offerings are recorded in detail as the altar is formally dedicated. Moses then hears God speaking to him from above the mercy seat in the tabernacle.

God instructs Moses to take a census of the men able to serve in Israel’s army. Each tribe is counted and organized. The tribes are then arranged around the tabernacle in a specific order. Israel prepares to move forward as a structured nation.
